The first couple pages hooked me and hooked me fast. Campbell was right, I HADN'T heard any of this information before. How DARE the powers that be try to keep this from me. But the more I read, the more my interest, belief and appreciation waned. First it was the patronizing, borderline evangelical tone. There is a lot of "I was the FIRST!" self-aggrandizing going on here. Even if he was the first, a little humility goes a long way, especially in science where nothing is ever 100% proven. Then it was the science. This guy has done a LOT of research, read a lot of research and been in the scientific community a long time. There's no doubt in my mind that he knows his stuff. However, what happens in a lab experiment in a rat is not guaranteed to happen in a human. The author talks about the distinction between correlation and causation, but then seems to conveniently forget that paragraph. Lastly, it was the tone of the final chapters. The finger-shaking, whiny, conspiracy theory attitude did nothing to further engage either my sympathies or belief in the theories presented. All that being said, I do believe that a plant-based diet, with low to no fats, sugars and animal products is the healthiest way to eat and will lead to long-term health benefits. I align myself more with the Michael Pollan school of thought which is "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants" rather than Campbell's more hardline vegan stance of no animal products at all. So while I appreciated Campbell's research and beliefs, the delivery, combined with too many leaps of faith, rather than scientific evidence, all but destroyed the message.
