Just ok. Not a page turner. Not one of his best, in my opinion. However, I finished it, and that is saying something becasue when I really don't like a book, I do not finish it. I don't have enough time in my life to read books I don't like. I DO try to give it enough time to really know if I don't like it or if it is just a slow starter.

Such a wonderful comforting book. Actully made me cry at the end ( no book's dine that before!)
I really wanted to like this more. As a rule, I'm a sucker for novels in verse, and I had hope for using this with my high school students. The scope of the book is wide, with each character bringing several issues to the table. Yet, for such a short book, it took me forever to wade through it. By choosing to include the voices of so many characters, Grimes never develops enough energy or focus to really make this a compelling story. This can work - Seedfolks comes to mind - but is tricky to pull off, and to use the words of Tyrone, Bronx Masquerade never really 'flowed'. Still, I can imagine a thoughtful YA reader enjoying the book. It is appropriate for a middle school audience, raising complicated issues of race and identity without vulgarity or excess. It could also make for an interesting read-aloud / readers theater.

The book started off really strong and drew me in but towards the middle and end, I found myself skimming over a lot of the statistical information and wanting to get back to "the story". I plan to read the son's book to get his version.
I found the author a bit annoying. Very much reminded me of "Eat, Pray, Love" which I couldn't finish.

George Carlin is a god. 'Nuff said.
It occurred to me that I'd seen the movie a hundred times but never read the book, so I tracked down a used paperback and dove in. Goldman's book is about the book that the movie was about... sort of. It's an extremely different experience than the movie, which is not a straight adaptation of this novel. Goldman subverts with constant interjection, some of which is funny and interesting, some of which isn't. But overall, I really enjoyed it. Like hanging out with people who are good friends with people you know.

Re-read, I mean. I was thoroughly disinterested while being forced to read it in high school.

I just reread Twilight again since the husband is out of town for the month. I know it is so trendy to love these books but I do. I also thought the partial Midnight Sun manuscript on Stephanie Meyer's web page was an entertaining read. It helped me like Bella a lot more, and I also love the "natural man" type conflict she gives Edward in it.:) If only he could see the big picture, ha. Sure there are some flaws, the writing isn't life changing, and just when you were ready for a good fight she does turn a little too happy ending. But come on she's a mother of 3 young boys who wrote 5 books in a few years during her spare time. Not to mention that Twilight was her first try. But I have decided I not a fan of the movie; I can't stop laughing in all the wrong places.
Very good study on the incredibly strong yet low key personality that won the civil war. No one else could do it. Others had their chance and lost the psychological war. It's proof that God uses circumstances outside your current understanding to form you for something larger headed your way, that you can't yet see, and that only you, now so formed, can overcome. Have trust that you are being prepared no matter how things seem at the moment to you.
典型的YA公平,但写得很好,写得很好。
