A straightforward action story with a scientific backdrop. Much of the movie was lifted directly from the book but there were also quite a few differences, the book had more suspense, the movie had more of a "wow" factor due to the special effects. I really enjoyed the book and the differences between it and the movie made it an exciting read even though I've seen the movie so many times.

I like political people hanging with aliens. Makes for fun times! She's a senator, he's an alien, and together they want to try to stop his people from relocating all of mankind. Will they succeed?
3 words: mailed it in 2 more words: unbelievably pithy

Read this one on my own and really enjoyed the play on the Gothic literature archteype. (Austen/Classics)
These books are very compelling. Exciting, biblical prophecies coming to pass, but almost paralyzing in the fear they encourage. I think that we could get wrapped up in being 'prepared' physically for the last days, but the desire needs to be to be prepared spiritually.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I read it for a class on multiculturalism. On that subject, it is an excellent book. The historical and cultural aspects of it are very well written. The characters are constructed in a very straightforward manner. Eugenides writing style alternates between narrator and first person, which sometimes makes the book seem choppy, but allows the reader to get into the different cultures and mindsets of all of the characters. As for the other aspects of the book, the plot moves very slowly and sometimes I struggled with the facts the book presented. There were often aspects that were too minimally outlined or too over the top to digest. The overall story, a coming of age book about a hermaphrodite along with a family history, was very interesting if nothing else. I wanted to continue reading because the writing was very good, even if the overall plot was somewhat lacking.
** spoiler alert ** I'm so confused by this series. I absolutely love it and yet I find myself irritated. But it's the good kind of irritation. The kind that tells me I obviously care about these characters. This book has something- je ne sais quoi, that the Twilight series lacked. This book is NOT a love story, it is a fast-paced action, adventure with paranormal/fantasy twists and there just so happens to be a lot of sexual tension. And unlike Edward/Jacob you've got two truly awesome contenders who are brothers and love each other just as much as their smitten for the girl. I honestly don't know which t-shirt to wear? Team Derek or Team Simon? And regardless of the boys there's so much going on here. Chloe is slowly learning to hone her necromancer powers and she has friends in this life and some in the afterlife and she needs to find peace for them all by finally destroying "The Edison Group". I will definitely be picking up the next installment of this trilogy. Even though it doesn't come out until- groan- May of next year.

not as good as her first

Miéville has written a fast-paced, imaginative, and clever young adult novel set in UnLondon, the "other London" where items go when they're thrown out in our world.
