This book was actually really cool and I would like to finish it eventually since I am all about the collective paradigm shift. The reason I put it down was we had the author for a store reading and sold all the copies so I had to return mine to stock, then was distracted by something else before I could pick it back up.
If anyone wishes to have the joy sucked out of reading, I would recommend this book. I've read problem solving questions in grade school math text books with better pacing and character development than this.
Engaging read about a German family during WWII that didn't necessarily agree with all the usual politics. The family was lovable, and as long as a little language in German doesn't bother you, they tell a good story. Through the perspective of Death, which is unusual.

I wonder if all of those negative commentaries (okay two) I've read are by folks who have actually read the book at all. I enjoyed reading this book, it was very accessible.
After reading the first chapter, K (my 6-year old), did not want to put it down and announced, "This book is AMAZING!"

This is one of those books that has a great one-line tag line - "plane full of beauty queens crashes on a desert island" - I mean, can you beat that? That might seem like a rhetorical question, but it's not. The correct answer is: "Not until the pirates arrive". Libba Bray has such an unbelievable imagination. She riffs on modern politics and pop culture like your snarkiest friend. She punctuates the narrative with questionnaires completed by the beauty queens themselves, scripts for over-the-top parodic commercials and footnotes with hilarious asides. She populates the island with all kinds of surprises, but she also plants all kinds of surprises within the ranks of the beauty queens. At times I might have wished I could pick ONE beauty queen and follow her single story in greater depth but, then, what would I have had to give up? I refuse to choose. In conclusion, this is a great, funny satirical and heart-felt look at what it means to be a girl in America today. Are we products, pets or propaganda? The answer is no, far from it, we are fierce. (And also often pretty but because we feel like it not because you make us.) Side note: some of the frankest and most useful advice about sex, love and dating in this book...why aren't more books for girls so relevant? Side side note: Will someone please get a copy of this book to Tina Fey so she can make it into an awesome movie or TV series, please? Quick, before Ryan Murphy sees it!

This short story happens between Out of the Box 5 and Out of the Box 6. "Do you think someone is watching?" Virginia had barely kept herself away from the club all week. She managed not to go but she could resist no longer. It was Friday and it was time to finally allow herself the pleasure of seeing Anando. This would be her sixth, or perhaps maybe her seventh. Who could keep track at this point? Mot her. Not when their "...encounters just seem(ed) to merge together in her mind to form one glorious night of unending pleasure." This time Virginia's and Anando's encounter happens at the club instead of Anando's house. I liked the change of scene and the added excitement that the possibility of being seen caused. Yet again a great read from Kallysten. I've decided that I just have to read everything that she's written. Why wouldn't I? She never seems to disappoint me.

I will miss these books..... hillariouse!!!!
Beautiful and sad. Charlie comes across as such a sweet kid! This book is reminiscent of Catcher in the Rye, but without the whining! This kid has always been a misfit, but when he starts high school, he somehow gets to be friends (or at least included by) a group of seniors. Interesting dynamic with his family--at times they seem awful, but at others they seem very close--I think charlie's journey has been a journey for the whole family. Lots of alcohol and drugs, and a pretty cavalier attitude toward sex--definitely on the older end of the spectrum of YA lit.
