It’s been impossible to ignore the Stieg Larsson trilogy, so I downloaded the first book on the Kindle and got reading. It’s an odd one. The story is good, intriguing, although it was never un-put-downable. I found a spoof of the writing by Nora Ephron and it’s spot on, particularly about the many similar Swedish names. That doesn’t make it bad, though. I did enjoy the mystery aspect, and the several sub-stories were good. I didn’t really like how they solved the Harriet thing only to have a good couple of chapters left. It felt like a bit of a letdown after such good puzzle work. The only other thing was the characters. Fascinating and intriguing, but ultimately not very likeable. Weird. I do still want to read the second book though.

Meh. This took me a long time to finish because I just got sick of it. The characters are sort of interesting and the plot has some clever twists that I sometimes got excited about...meh. The characterization is silly overall, especially the "genius" bad guy who is so pointedly blind and stupid concerning the kids operating right beneath his nose. The whole evil plot is kind of boring and nonsensical. The book is wordy and long and long-winded and overly loquacious, but the characterization is juvenile. The kids who have the motivation and ability to slog through a book this size that moves this slowly will not be attracted to the characters.
