Ok, you need to be over 40 to enjoy this book. I LOVED it. It's hilarious and touching at the same time. The main character is a former Miss Alabama who has decided it's time to end it all. She plans the perfect suicide, but things keep interrupting her plan. Fannie Flagg is the author of Fried Green Tomatoes.

This could have been an interesting book, but was utterly lackluster. The characters were flat cardboard cutouts with no depth or feeling. I didn't feel that this story was set in a larger "Universe" because it was so poorly sketched out. There were some exciting moments during several duels, but these were the few highlights to this disappointing book.
I think I liked this book. But I'm not sure. :) In a futile quest to understand quantum mechanics, I consume every layman's book on the subject that I can find. If you're as obsessed with that mystifying subject as I am -- and if, like me, you lack the serious mathematics and physics background that you'd need to be able to acquire a *real* understanding -- then I think you'll enjoy this book. "Uncertainty" is more of a history of the milieu from which quantum mechanics sprang than an attempt to impart an in-depth understanding of the subject, but it does feature revealing insights into the characters of the main players, and it adroitly chronicles the animated back-and-forth that characterized the early years of the new science. It's easy to read, engaging, and informative. Check it out, you'll enjoy it. Or, then again, maybe you won't... :)
I was very excited to finally get around to reading this book and it started off with such excitement and plot twists, but I feel like the ending was a little weak and lack luster. I hope the 3rd book in the series is good and doesn't get too crazy.

Very good, sad, but not a tear-jerker.

if ever you wanted a pet dragon .... does anyone else think this series is totally star wars, but with dragons (complete with the "surprise" discovery that the main character is the hidden son of the bad guy... who was not always bad but sucked into the dark side by the emperor, i mean the evil, magical, dragon-riding king ... there's even a Degobah, but instead of yoda training in a swamp, it's the elfin woods and an ancient dying rider of yore... an old man story teller, an old family friend, truly sent to look over Eragon, but turns out to be Obi-Wan, I mean Brom, a legendary rider himself ... the damsel in distress turns out to be a powerful, head-strong princess of the Rebellion / Elves ... leading the fight against the empire) now to be fair, there is also a loooot of Tolkein in there, a band of merry travelers composed of a young man, yet untried, but eager to be helpful and honorable, an elf, a dwarf... there are Kull and Urgals, which sound an awful lot like Urukai / Orcs... with their snouts of horses and horns or rams and low rumbly rough language... having said that ... it's still completely addictive and interesting. i look forward to the final book in the trilogy.

Best of the series so far. As an over 40s librarian myself, I identify with Helma (I feel like I know her well enough to use her Christian diminutive). We are of the generation that is between when the rules were back-and-white and when the rules were all thrown out. We like to see things done correctly the first time and we do not suffer fools well.

Perfect book to read as a high school student. Holden Caulfield represents the alienation that all adolescents feel at one time or another.
