This is where I end up sounding like a dumbo who has no appreciation for serious texts. I really struggled with In Praise of Savagery. I was interested by the premise, I enjoyed some of the tongue-in-cheek prose which ridiculed the voice of the text while almost underscoring the more serious messages of the book. The strange idea behind the text shouldn't have worked on paper, but they did. But... not for me. You know what? There are two reasons that I struggled with this book. 1) Post Colonial Literature 2)Colonialism and the Masculine Two university courses which I remember fondly, but also with still-painful memories of essays and assignments. Maybe this sort of literature is just too much like "homework" for me now? I hope not. The book is a strange mixture of travelogue and biographical memoir which journeys through the Africa that once was, and the Africa that is. Thesiger's journey of old Africa was much more interesting to me as the modern author's journey just couldn't live up to the bright and savage excitement of Thesiger's story. Indeed, reading about Wilfred Thesiger's adventured reminded me of the sort of excitement I used to love in Wilbur Smith novels. This book has pace, excitement and a use of language which is almost melodic at times. So there was nothing wrong with the actual writing... The only reason that it wasn't for me is that it just wasn't my cup of tea. All because two university courses has killed this genre for me...for now at least. So, how to rate it? I would recommend this book to others who have an interest in travelogue, memoir and colonialism. There is depth and meaning behind the parallel journeys in this text and its messages are important. Therefore, despite the facet that this book wasn't "for me", I can't justify a low star rating. Like the coward that I am I shall give this book... ***

i am a little sorry to not give this book five stars. this was a wonderful book for me, because it taught me some things about software that i didnt set out to learn. i never got the agile line "people over process" before, now i do. there is a lot of very wonderful material in this book. its worth the read. the interviews are mostly excellent, and the case studies are all very interesting. his summaries of some of the major agile methodologies is good primer material. some of the things that bugged me: he spazzes on and on about how the internet age has changed software forever, and about how software businesses will fail in this new fast-paced environment. this is about the biggest non-starter you could have for me to convince me to be agile. i work in research/academia, where these kinds of considerations are secondary. i also, personally, do not give a shit about "successful business". it is less than interesting. finally, i am anything but a "fast-paced" guy. but this has never stopped me from being a highly productive software developer. the second thing that bugged me is that much of the book is repetitive, unfocused, and overly abstract. i many times found myself just pushing through large (10+ page) annoying sections of the book. i didnt skim, mostly out of respect for the author who really brought me a lot: a much much clearer understand of agile than i ever had, an attitude change about agile and software development practices in general, some good basic background on different agile methodologies, and some good interviews with some cool people.

Warning: I was prepared not to like this book, but it blew me away. If any of you out there are having doubts about reading this book, thinking that it is just another Halo or Hush Hush, do yourself a favor a read it...PLEASE! This book was so emotional and amazing. It's kinda rare for me to give a book five stars, but this book caught my attention in the three hours it took me to read it. Three hours, I couldn't stop! This book follows Clara, part angel who is fulfilling her reason for being on earth. An angels purpose is something that they were meant to do on earth. She begins to have visions of a forest fire and a boy. So, she, her mom, and her brother move to jackson Wyoming so she can fulfill her purpose. In Jackson, she experiences hate love surprise and friendship. As she continues to have visions of her purpose, she has to make choices that could impact not only her life, but the lives of people she cares about. When I finished this book, I was immediately hoping for another installment. I loved Clara as a main character, and Tucker was a close second. The characters were so real and the descriptions of them are great. Clara's emotions are so real and detailed, as well as the emotion of the other characters. As I compare this book to other angel YA books I have read, I realize that this book is so much better because the main character isnt so annoying that you want to tear the wings from her back. Also, this book has a good dose of love, but not too much, and some good friendships. I especially love reading about days that she spent with Tucker after her birthday. In conclusion, this book deserves a five because I know it was three hours of my live that I will not miss, a d look forward to spending more of them on the next book!
