It's almost a genre, right? Feelgood, dogood, with a happy ending. The bad people exit stage left in a hurry and are never allowed to do permanent damage because love conquers all, good intentions count, and all bitter comes with a double dose of sweet. I like the way Billie Letts basically tells the same story again and again. It's a sweet story, a nice break from more "realistic" and of course far deeper examinations of human nature. And she tells it with heart. The author shows through her characters and, since she's a darn likeable author, that's cool by me. I was listening to an NPR piece about "genre busters," the other day; authors who, like Ursula LeGuin, get pigeonholed into a genre but accomplish far more than the genre requires. Seems to me there are two ways to be a genre buster: you either offer far more substance, or you craft your story far better, than your genre requires. Billie Letts is a solid craftsman, better than your average bear. I'm not sure she's quite deft enough that I'd call her a genre buster, but at the very least she's in the top ranks of her genre. Ohh, and let's call the genre, Oprah sugar (because there's also an Oprah vinegar)!

This book was very interesting. It's about the topic of gay rights which I am very passionate about. The main character Zoe is a music therapist. If I were musical in any way that would be a great profession for me since I definitely have a huge love for all types of music. The book is the first of Jodi's to come with it's own cd of songs, each of which corresponds with a chapter in the book. This was an awesome touch. Much to my dismay, since Jodi truly is one of my very favorite authors, I did find this book a bit formulaic. She chooses a hot button issue and then there is a trial pitting the characters against each other in each and every book. Don't get me wrong I still found the book very well done, I just had an easier time putting it down.

Ha! I had forgotten I read this until I saw it on my "to-read" list. It's that good.

I learned from this book that you can rewrite a few sentences of each of your last few journal publications and publish it as a new book... Seriously, it's an excellent monograph bringing together a lot of Professor Gherardi's pioneering work in the field of 'knowing in practice'. It combines a good outline of the intellectual background, with some excellent examples from her empricial work, particularly around safety practices on construction sites. I think the book could probably gain from investigating the cross-over between identity and identity work theories which spring from a similar interest in practice, and from an engagement with the critics of practice-based knowing.

Another Jodi Picoult book I read thinking it would be good. It was as disappointing as The Pact was for me. Both of them followed the same formula -- small town rocked by a horrible event, lots of courtroom drama, teenaged boy locked up and dealing with being in jail, parents trying to come to terms with children they thought they knew. The courtroom antics always have this giant buildup but fall flat.

A friend introduced me to Welch and told me he was a brilliant writer. I struggled through this novel waiting to see something new or even interesting. Ultimately Denton Welch turned out to be a whiny bitch with nothing to say. Is that harsh? God, I feel like he murdered me a little through this novel.

this is more like porn than Henry & June, and people will probably like it more or less accordingly.

Love Francine Rivers, and both these books were good. They do drag on a bit after a while though.

I couldn't put this book down! Seriously, I was in the middle of my children's music class reading the last chapter in the corner. It was so different from anything I'd read before ... I just wish someone hadn't spoiled the "alternate ending" for me. Parts of it were horrifying and gritty, but it was incredibly thought-provoking, sensory, and even suspenseful in parts.
