Decent book, not a bad plot, a bit unimaginative at the end with the "miracle" tip that leads to the conclusion

This 17th book of the Anita Blake series gets back to more of the executioner-type work that Anita became infamous for. In this book Anita, teamed with Edward and two other Marshals, try to track down a serial killer vampire (Vittorio) that none of the vampires can track. Anita continues to question whether vampire hunting is still a good choice for her and continues to battle her hungers. We don't get much time with any of the regular men in Anita's life, which is by turns disappointing and refreshing. Ultimately we see a showdown that may have been centuries in the making, the unmasking of old powers and possibly the destruction of said powers. I'll be interested to see if Hamilton follows up on the allusions between Truth and Wicked and Vittorio. Way more action, not much sex and possibly the start of a new chapter in Anita's life (if her questioning of everyone and everything doesn't get in the way). Definitely worth the read.

A well written and researched biography of one of America's most tragically flawed heroes. Traces the Mick's journey from the Oklahoma mine fields to his much belated battle for sobriety. Spends as much time marveling at his accomplishments, as it does recounting his many cringeworthy drunken escapades and loose definition of "marriage." All in all, the author does a great job of examining what drew a generation to love the Mick as an icon, warts and all. 7 out of 10 on the plane read scale.

This books was one that all three of us kids read. I knew it is about a cat, but I didn't actually remember the plot. i read this aloud to William which wasn't the best choice. William did care, but it created a lot of guilt for me given or two young kids and three upsurped cats. Lots of guilt. it is a slow moving book without many big plot points, so I'm not sure how its intended audience would recieve it. The descriptions of cats and babies are spot on, but there is less humor and action than the Ramona or Ralph books. This might be a good nook to help prepare an old child for a new baby, but it could also be too depressing until the last few pages.

This is a YA title. An incredible, gripping story of survival. I admire Mariatu's courage and desire to help others. Such a great book!

http://myaddictionisreading.blogspot.... I really wanted to like this story more than I did. I felt that it was nice to have the point of view of a male character in Jackson. I liked that we got to see his emotions in not only dealing with his father, but seeing his sister "years after" her death again, and spending time with Holly in a past they never shared. For some reason I didn't connect with the characters the way I would have liked. There was something missing to make me really feel like I had a stake in what happened to them. The progression of events moved a little slow for most of the story. This story really kicks in at the very end and I think that if the author took the last 15% or so and went on from there it would have been more successful. Not a bad book, just lacking in some areas.

Funny for a few pages, and then you are wondering when this lady is going to get over her former self.

If you are reading this book and haven't yet read Ali's Brick Lane, put this book down and get it! Brick Lane is so superior, that it almost makes In the Kitchen seem like a bad book. Not that it is a bad book, and it does have similar themes, but it is written from a different, and, in my opinion, less convincing, point of view. Both deal with immigration and identity, one from the immigrants point of view, the other from the British point of view. Brick Lane deals with the internal struggles of immigrants to maintain identity and community as 'outsiders' in Britain. (It is particularly good at showing the impact of gender among immigrants of particular cultures.) In the Kitchen deals with an employer's growing unease with the injustices (many illegal and some violent) suffered by his immigrant employees and others he comes in contact with in the service industry. He struggles with his own identity, a history of depression in his family, and what it means to be "British." The themes in In the Kitchen were not particularly obvious in the beginning and it took about half way through to develop an interest in the people and plot, but the further I got the harder time I had putting it down. It is good, and worth a read of you are interested in the subjects. But, it has been done better, particularly by this author.
