Freakin' loved it. This book was incredible. It told the epic tale of Oscar Wao and his family's journey from the Dominican Republic to the US, and back again. Each chapter focuses on a different character - first Oscar, then his older sister, then his mom when she was growing up back in the DR, etc - but is told from the same omniscient narrator, who is eventually revealed as the subject of one of the book's later chapters. All of the characters were absolutely lovable and relatable. The writing style was a delight - like an urban, modern day, hip but slightly nerdy JRR Tolkien. The book also provides a chilling account of the history of the DR. So good. I have a hard time imagining who wouldn't love this book.

I thought that this book would be boring, but I ended up loving it.
My favorite book from one of my favorite authors. Had to include it on my shelf :-)

Re-reading for clues etc, in prep for the last book. Ahh, I love this series. It is light and fun yet with a deeper side and it feels so nice to read how it all began once again. My view of this first book is very different now that I know where it is going.

I can't give this book a rating because it wouldn't be fair. I am very grateful to the author for sending me a signed copy. I was not able however to get into the book. I read half and couldn't really get grabbed by the story line. I was confused a lot of the time. I found the Xen very interesting and kept reading to find out what would happen to Jeremy. I just couldn't keep up with Ann and what was happening with her project at work, or the scandle that was going on. This was a bit over my head for me. :/
I went into reading this book with an open mind mostly because of positive reviews from other kids. The first hundred pages are indeed slow but build for a strong middle and end of the book. The start of book two is where I got really got into the book and more details became apparent. I read the last hundred and fifty pages in one sitting it was that heavy. But the way Orwell keeps expressing the facts as you go along, we learn the true risk Winston is taking with each day. It’s almost scary to even ponder an actual society like Oceania, but Orwell is able to make the reader feel the power that Big Brother and the Party have over every single person. Its truly a great novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I hate the cover of this book. Who is that even supposed to be? I liked the story line of this one better than the first though.
I remember, as a kid, watching the animated movie on tv. Years later, I noticed the book on the family bookshelf. I pulled it down and started reading. I was lost in this makebelieve world with its own rules and language that Adams had created for me. Later, I joined the military and decided to put together my own bookshelf. I bought and read Watership Down again. Now the political messages started getting through, as well as the theological ones. This book is great but overlooked because people see a book about rabbits and move on by. Don't be this person. Escape to Watership Down. Probably my favorite book of all time.
This is a collection of three Finnish novellas by an author with anachronistic style and sensibilities. I was not convinced by her portrayal of Baltic Europe during the Renaissance (Kallas was greatly interested in Estonia, especially) as being mainly a hotbed for ignorance, cruelty and tragedy. However, her archaic tone and prose style are fascinating. Of the two novellas here that I read, I especially recommend her unique werewolf story: "The Wolf's Bride."

Well, I liked reading about the streets of Boston in the beginning, but it was plenty gory and the plot went from plausible to ridiculous but I kept reading it. Not especially recommended unless you enjoy Stephen King.
