"Gormenghast, that is, the main massing of the original stone, taken by itself would have displayed a certain ponderous architectural quality were it possible to have ignored the circumfusion of those mean dwellings that swarmed like an epidemic around it s Outer Walls" - First line - Titus Groan It's hard to recommend Mervin Peaks Gormenghast trilogy enough. His series charts the world of Gormenghast castle and the lives of the occupants. This microcosm of ritual and order sets the scene for the inevitable anarchism by our anti-hero Steerpike. The books are rich in textural detail, and the prose are enormously satisfying. It’s quite possible to wallow in the pages of these books purely on the basis of their poetry. "His body gave the appearance of being malformed but it would be difficult to say exactly what gave it this gibbous quality. Limb by limb, it appeared that he was sound enough, but the sum of these several members accrued to an unexpectedly twisted total. His face was pale like clay and save for his eyes, mask-like. These eyes were set very close together, and were small, dark red, and of startling concentration" – of Steerpike The series is not only beautifully written, it also manages to involve the reader in a fantastic plot while exploring themes such as class system, Machiavellian politics, and the nature of ritual, which Peak does whilst never straying into religion and the inevitable consequences of directly satirising it. Go and buy a copy, or I’ll lend you one.

America. Land of the free, home of the brave. Land of the free to write bravely depressing stories, that is. Death, drug addiction, grieving, and racism are just a few of the myriad topics tackled herein. Finalist judge Cling McCown picked three of the most believably traumatic tales as the prize winners, and while they are very well-written, the true gems can be found much later in the collection. “Metal and Glass” evokes images of scenes from White Oleander, sharing the theme of the strong brittle mother overshadowing her blossoming daughter. “Nearby” creates some of the most beautiful images, contrasting the flavor of a domestic Brooklyn brownstone with an immigrant couple from Haiti who rent space from their mixed-race-couple landlords. “Two Ham Theory” is the closest story to comedy, with its hams disappearing from kitchens and reappearing in yards… or vice versa. These pieces paint a comprehensive picture of America as it is today, no golden roads or lands of opportunity, just real people in real Brooklyn brownstones dealing with real problems and real issues. They are not uplifting or inspiring, they are not magical or mystical or life changing, they simply are. Just like us. The varying tones of each individual author and the changing styles of each story keep readers on their toes, and the fresh and unexpected use of language keeps pages turning long after you should have turned out the lights and gone to sleep. But like the cover, there are more details to be found upon each new look, and subsequent re-readings are a must. Just like America, this book is a melting pot of unique people and stories, to be told over and over again.
