I loved this book! It was the perfect way to end the series, and give you a great ending, with again, a great message. I always wondered if they would go back to Ember for supplies because it seemed like it would make sense. I loved how there was a little something extra for the people from Ember to help them in the new world, and how Doon figures it all out. As a "happy ending person" I was glad to see Lina and Doon together at the end, and to get a glimpse into the future of their great grand kids and the world as it would be. This series really makes you think about how the state of the world is now, and what it will be like in 50 years, and even later on. I laughed so hard at the names Trogg gave to his family, naming them after the ancient cities... New Yorik, Minny-Appelis, Scawgo, and Kanza City.

The mother of all darkness? Really! That's all it took...I expected more.

An up-do-date exploration of how the human mind works. Similar to her 1990 book A Natural History of the Senses, this was a rather informal narrative of details from her personal experiences, and scientific facts she's learned over the years, including some very recent discoveries. I learned of this one through a tribute to Ackerman's birthday (7 October 1948) on Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac.

go ahead, try to diagnose her. I had to write a paper on it. Do we agree?!

I read this book a few years ago. Everybody and their mother was raving about it. They were all wrong. It was mildly interesting at best.
I liked this book... I got angry a few times at they way the book went... and would have liked a little more romance, but all in all it was a pretty good book. I'll try the second one in the series and see how it goes, I'm hoping that the characters carry through... that will be the clincher if I read book 3 or not :)

I thorougly enjoyed this book. It has its flaws, namely the suspension of disbelief required when reading about the city ( where does the food come from ? How do they earn money ? ) but the quality of the writing outweighs these to my mind, as does the unusual premise and structure. The ending is a bit of an anticlimax. Lots of reviews I have read of the book compare it to the Cloud Atlas, which I quite enjoyed but which did have the whiff of style over content about it, because of the way the two stories run in parallel and gradually reveal themselves. I think this book is a superior one because it has a much more emotional pull to it. It tackles some universal themes - how do our lives affect those around us, what is memory and remembering, solitude, the meaning of life and death and more. It sounds pretty weighty, but the writing has a lightness of touch that makes the story incredibly thought-provoking without bludgeoning the reader over the head. I'd urge you to read this book.
Didn't finish due to lack of interest

I did enjoy the book and the comments on the cover are true, you really do feel as though you know the two main characters and that they are real people not just characters in a book. Only reason I didn't give this the maximum rating is that I was reading this after a completely different genre (crime thriller) and the previous books were a trilogy which I was completely blown away with and anything else was always going to pale in comparison. I didn't find it hard to put the book down and do something else but that's not to take away from it. It really is a good story and I can see the potential for it being a box office smash when the film is released later this year. I think overall I'd classify this as a good holiday read.
