I give this 3 stars for the story, but 4 stars for Annie. She was a great character.

I particularly enjoyed this because of the apocalyptic/millenial cult that was at the center of the mystery. Now that I am adapted to how different the books are from the Bones tv show, I expect to enjoy the books more than I did the first in the series.

Oh that green light. The image of Gatsby trembling and reaching for the green light is so outstandingly beautiful. The green light may represent something different to everyone, but we all have a green light and that's what makes Gatsby so very human. If I were stranded on a desert island and could only have one book...this would be the one! Since high school I have read it about 4 times and it gets better everytime. I vividly recall reading it in high school. Sitting on my bed in my parents home...and all the chemicals in my brain simply exploding!!! I understood then that this is what a great novel was all about. I was too young to fully understand it, it took subsequent readings for that, but Gatsby turned me into a lover of literature. Gatsby is THE greatest American novel.

i think anyone who has had a grandparent or parent or loved one suffer a drawn-out death can relate to the mixed feelings the characters in this family experience. franzen does an excellent job of portraying the family unit as it separates itself both naturally and unnecessarily. as three grown siblings (all with relationships and professions of their own) come to terms with their father's slow demise (first in function, then in existence) and their mother's handling of it, it becomes clear that sibling roles as children have great affects on those roles as adults. of course, the results of this are not usually good. literary-types would be interested as story focuses more attention to the youngest brother, an english professor at a liberal arts college whose career decision has always disappointed his father, who definitely represents franzen. in how to be alone franzen chronicles his family's struggle with his father's alzheimer's; here, the father suffers from parkinsons's disease. so, the idea of choosing a career that is not exactly supported by family/ world (other siblings have financially lucrative careers) comes up. though it is long, it reads fast as franzen's language isn't too challenging and his prose generally quick-moving.

Hard to believe that this could really happen in the US. More and more innocent people are being released from prison no due to DNA testing.
I liked his Devil in White City, too. The dual story format doesn't bother me like it bothered some of the literary critics. And I would never, ever have read a bio of Marconi otherwise. What an entrepreneur he was....I also love the feel of the times Larson gives us.
OK, I admit, I wanted to quit somewhere around page 489. But the last 100 pages make the first 700 worth it, more or less. Lots of good history, but I find that I am just not interested right now. Might have been better to have saved this one to read when the kids were a little older and my eyes weren't already crossing by 8pm. Overall, I'm glad I read it, but I'm also glad it's over. :)
Since I will be going to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in February I decided why not try and power-read all seven books again before that? So I am one book down. This title had always been my least favorite and I remember thinking, "Oh the series doesn't really get going until book #3" but I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this one. One just small point to note that I didn't remember from my first reading was how long into the book it takes Harry and Ron to become friends with Hermione (at least halfway through the book). The HP stage has been set and I'm excited to get into Chamber of Secrets (again)!

Great book
Quite possibly the worst book I've ever read.
