I really don't know why... but...I just don't like this story. I couldn't connect to the characters at all. I could of course get described pain and sorrow but it just didn't fit. This book didn't speak to me and even if I do believe that the plot is developed really well, I just couldn't connect to it.

This book is pretty much a fluff mystery. There are several different problems solved which keeps it interesting. The book is most interesting because it is set in Botswana. I enjoyed the cultural descriptions and the setting. The characters were unique also. <- This book is just being released as a series on HBO. I'm watching it at present. Some of the characters have been made more colorful, and I think the gay hairdresser has been added. (Although he may show up in later books.) The show is good, but if I hadn't read the book I don't know that it would hold my attention... ->

This book took me a long time to read. It wasn’t a book that you would stay up all night to read to get to the next chapter. I would read a chapter here and there. After reading it I wasn’t inspired by the tragic one after the other stories about her life. I must admit that after reading the first couple chapters, I didn’t think I could finish the book. The author, Sandra Dallas, uses way too much shock value when she writes. I found it hard reading about the loss of Hennie’s family, the death of her husbands Billy and Jake, the tragic death of her daughter, miscarriages, the drinking, gambling, abusing of women, murder of a baby, graphic death of the man working the dredge, prostitution, etc. etc. I was glad at the end there was finally forgiveness and happiness for both Hennie and Abrahm. Now for the positive parts of the book!! I thought that Hennie was a strong woman with a lot of character. She would have to be because she has endured and seen a lot. I thought it was quite ironic/symbolic that her last name was Comfort. Maybe her prayers for sale brought “comfort” to all who wanted them. I also liked Hennie’s friendship with Nit. I think there is a lot to be said about building bonds between the old and young. I also enjoyed the quilting aspect and metaphors in the book. I liked how she finally mended the ripped quilt after her baby’s death. It shows that their can be healing after forgiveness. Last but not least, I am grateful I live today and didn’t have to endure and see the things described in this book.

This is a book about a daughter of Egyption-Greek mother and a Palestian father. Born in Boston, Nidali was raised in Kuwait. Her teen years were spent in Egypt, then they came to the U.S. and lived in Texas after Kuwait is invated by Iraq, as her father got work in the U.S. I had a VERY hard time with how the father treated his family. It is a story of perserverance and grit. It is not a comfortable book to read, but I am glad that I stuck with it.It makes me appreciate my cushy life.

I have never hated a book more in my life! The whole book is spent describing why one of the main characters killed herself and why her boyfriend ultimately lets her do so. The reasoning is absolutely ridiculous and, I think, completely implausible. Picoult has a way of writing that forbids you from setting any of her books down, but her words are often too wishy-washy for me.

This is tied with 2 other books as the best book I've ever read! I LOVED it. It was so interesting, touching, funny, and eye-opening. I was really sorry to have finished it because I enjoyed it so much.
