** spoiler alert ** Written in a first-person, reflective narrative by the protagonist, Kathy H. Despite the protagonist being a 30-something, educated individual, it is narrated by someone who possesses the vocabulary of a 10-year old, which makes it difficult to follow at times and repetitive in sentence structure. The narrator highlights events from her childhood, and while she stresses the importance of each event, only a few are ever explained later on as to why they are relevant. One example is Tommy's fits of rage that are described throughout the narrative, but when Kathy finally asks him later in life what they were about, he simply says he was just angry once in a while. When Kathy and Tommy go to Miss Emily to ask for a deferral, the realisation that there is no such thing leaves them content and accepting of the news, which, given how eager they were to pursue this option, leaves the reader wondering why they wouldn't try an alternative way.

"Toxic turned out to be a surprisingly good read for such a short story, only 73 pages long. A very quick read with a lot of story packed inside." With a taster like this check out Tiffany's full review on Nocturne Romance Reads http://www.nocturnereads.com/Toxic---...

I told Tony that I'd read this during our first week at Bard, and I have not done so yet. Pretty sure that makes me a tool.

This book, the first in a series, is a recent discovery. A fantasy world, where gay and lesbian people are unnoteworthy, and many people seem to be casually bisexual. The world is richly imagined, and I quickly became attached to the characters. All three are worth the read. I just read her three prequel books, starting with The Bone Doll's Twin, and found them enjoyable too, if not as insistently page turning as Luck in the Shadows and Stalking Darkness. She's someone I'm going to keep my eye on, and I hope I haven't heard the last from Seregil and Alec.

** spoiler alert ** I have been rooting for Dorian since the first book. Kiyo has been always so wishy-washy and never really manned-up for her. Sure, he did for Maiwenn and their newborn, but left Eugenie to do the best she could and then later look down on the choices she made. He was sort of a really "tool" box in this book. So long.

I'm still not sure about this book. I should probably mention that that the high ratings and promising premise gave me very high expectations, which might be why it disappointed me. As to why it disappointed me? Well, first of it's very long (500 pages). That could be 500 pages full of awesome action, character development, and cool world building, but sadly it's not. Well there's some (very simple) character development in there, and at least 70 pages of awesome action, but there could have been so much more. There's no background information or explanation about the fate of the world or the factions. The factions honestly seem a bit of silly to me. What are they even good for? Why do people want to live like that? There are a lot of other things that don't make sense. For example, how did Tris become so strong in only a couple of weeks? When did she learn to handle a gun? Heck, where did she learn to fight like that? Another thing i don't understand is the initiations. They pretty much torture these teenagers, physically and physiologically for two weeks. The hallucinations might make them a little calmer if they find themselves drowning or something one day, but i suspect they will moslty just cause nightmares. I'm not sure what to think of Tris. Her character is confusing and she doesn't really have a personality. She's a bit of a hypocritr, hating others for things she does herself. Overall the book was okay though. Interesting plot, interesting characters, kickass lead. I think I might read the second book, but if it doesn't get better after 100 pages this time i won't finish it. 3.5/5 stars
