Mckinley's 2nd attempt at beauty and the beast, and I think she should have stopped with Beauty. It was very unmemorable to me. I read it twice not realizing that I had read it before until I came to the end. I hated it the first time and obviously had blocked the memory. I really disliked it the second time. I felt very jipped at the end since I had spent so much time enjoying the novel. Unfortunately endings do have a big effect on how I view a book. although the writing and story were very good before the end, the end made it obsolete.

In my opinion, the main issue of this book is not about the proper choice (or not) of a child's name by his parents when they try to keep a Bengali tradition. The author's challenge was to show how different cultures can collide to each other in very simple questions. First, Gogol denies his background by refusing his father simple explanation for their name's choice. Only when he reaches his full maturity, he finds the real motivation for his namesake. I personally didn't like the character of Moushumi Mazumdar who is totally disconnected to her own identity. A magnificent book, no doubt about that.

I just finished reading this a couple of days ago. I loved it. It wasn´t an ending I was expecting. Some things connected in ways I didn´t think would ever connect and it shocked me. Bianca was her same self (strong, independant, and caring) Everyone warmed up to her being a ghost. Lucas turning was heartbreaking for him and Bianca. Their relationship was changed along the way and there was a complete shock at the end. Overall great book and amazing series.

I read this book first on the enthuiastic endorsement of my daughter, Amber, who was living in England. Then I read it with my book club. It is thoroughly entertaining.
A good book. Very interesting reading. I thought he superceded this one with "The River that Flows Uphill," however, which is a truly wonderful work.

Reading a novel after having already seen the movie is almost never a good idea; too much imagery has already been implanted in your brain, you know the story already, all the fun of imagination and expectation and surprise is gone. So I thought... There's not much missing from the movie, it turns out (they did a really good job), but the bits that are (family/regional history etc) are the best bits of the book and in themselves make it worth the read for the added depth (and depth of moody horror). And Woodrell's language! His discriptions, especially owing to his creative use of invented or re-functioned words (which aren't jarring at all, incidentally--you get the feeling with each one: shit, there just isn't any other way to put it, that's exactly what it is), are a joy to read, even when what he's describing isn't.

First thoughts: "I would SO love to jump into this book!" Reading this book was a great adventure. Take a little bit of Survivor, a dash of The Bachelor, and mix it with plenty of Jane Austen and you're bound to have fun!! The whole premise was pretty original for me and I absolutely understood and cheered on the main character, Chloe. I thought it took a lot of guts to leave all security behind and to risk everything to win $100,000 and the chance to have Mr. Darcy fall in love with you. The characters were just right and the story never lost its fast pace. The dialogue was spot on...I believed it all could happen and that's what made this book so enjoyable. Recommend? Yes! If you're looking for a modern day twist of Pride & Prejudice with plenty of humor and dashing men, then pick this book up...you won't be disappointed!
Oy. I wasn't sure to give it 3 or 4 stars because . . . well, I was in denial. I don't want to think about if there really are mean girls like the four depicted in this novel; I'm not an idiot, I know there are queen bees at all high schools, but these girls were beyond biz-notch. However, the set-up of the book was interesting, and the character redemption aspect well executed. My HS students will make this a top choice this coming year.
