Enjoyed this book, but am getting tired of the romance triangle, already, after only reading the 2nd book. Nikki Sands is attracted to her boss, Derek Malveaux, the owner of a winery in Napa Valley. She is also attracted to another winery owner, the brother of her best friend, Isabel. The misunderstandings between Nikki and her boss are really cliche - he misinterprets situations in which he sees Nikki. In his defense, if you don't understand the background for the situation, they are easily misinterpreted. Nikki is found consoling her friend's brother when she is arrested for murder. The brother is attracted to Nikki and not just her friend, as Nikki tries to delude herself. In the meantime, her boss is so indecisive about expressing his feelings for Nikki that it confuses her and leads her to believe he has no real interest in her and she has a better future with her friend Isabel's brother, Andres. These two deserve the angst they are causing each other because they won't talk and express their feelings to each other. I guess I'm getting used to nosy, pushy women who investigate and solve mysteries, because they don't think the police are doing enough or can do their job contemptibly. This is becoming a cliche too me, but until authors move beyond this device, I don't think I can repeatedly comment about this any longer. (It's getting annoying and almost as bad as the cliche's about the woman's movement - women doing men's jobs as well as men, women being as smart as men, etc) However, I still enjoyed the book.

Issue #27 finally came out, & I dug up my back issues & read the series from start to finish because I wanted to get a sense of the narrative arc since this tale was 10 YEARS in the making. The Verdict: this is one of the most brilliant extended storylines I've ever encounters. It will stand the test of time, up there with Watchmen and others of the 'hero' genre. PLANETARY is ultimately a holographic version of the Arabian Nights; it can be read as hero-noir, pastiche/tribute to the history of comic books & pulp & pop culture, delightful space-time science theoretical exploration, or a personal story of redemption and revenge. I was amazed that Ellis found a way to keep his narrative tone & pacing in tune over the course of 27 issues & 10 years-- that in itself is to be lauded.

Lord Ian Mackenzie spent years in an insane asylum. Now he has fixated on Beth, a rich widow determined to live life to its fullest. What an unusual book! Ian is a fascinating character, and seems to have some sort of autism. His condition makes the book different than other historical romances, but also sweeter. Beth is also an unusual character, able to come to terms with who Ian is while at the same time not losing herself in the process. The Mackenzie family is wonderfully oddball too, and I can see a lot of promise in their stories as well.
