Really easy read. Kinda funny, short. Read it if you can laugh about giant wieners;)

This starts with a great idea, but like the other books that I've read by Kim Stanley Robinson, the idea slowly withers under the weight of too many words. The book envisions world history if the Plague had killed off all of Europe, instead of just 30%. He explores how the various cultures would rise to fill the gap and interact to create something akin to what we have in our current world. He discredits the idea that certain ideas are attributable to single individuals (ie. you would have calculus even without Newton and understand gravity without Galileo). Perhaps most frustrating is his use of an astral plane that houses the set of souls that keep coming back as his protagonists during different points in time. Thus he can maintain a sense of continuity of character even when he jumps between cultures and time periods. But it is a contrivance, pure and simple. It does not lend itself to the clear storytelling he engages in throughout the book. And it ends weakly, he could have done more with the final story, with the final vision. Of course, at this point he had already written 600+ pages, and we had already read 600+ pages, so a end, even an unsatisfying one, was welcome. Worth reading but not a book that I will treasure.

I really liked this book. I found it on a website that had a list of hundreds of free ebooks. I fell in love with this story and the characters. It is more like one of the books that was written in the 80's, early 90's. My favorite type, the old bodice rippers. 2/29/12 I bought this book in print form, paid a fortune for it 20.00 from Claywords but I wanted it in my collectable keeper shelf.

Landon, forced out of his wolf pack, the Lupreda, because of a problem with his tracking senses. So, he can't smell as well as everyone else. Big deal. Tormented since the night he mistakenly took the life of a police officer, Landon Rourke has watched over his one and only child, Kaitlyn McKinney. Watching her grow from a toddler into a beautiful young woman and then a stunning adult, Landon has protected Kaitie when ever he could. But can he protect her from her biggest threat ... him. As part of the prophecy, Landon finds himself drawn to Kaitlyn, who is a drawn to him. That is ... until she finds out who killed her father. Landon. Who is in more danger, Landon or Kaitlyn as love takes over and pushes them both together time after time. And what else has fate in store for them? Great second book in this series. More sensual than the first book without being "raunchy."

A very enjoyable book. The beginning with its description of a bucolic snowfall that turns into a nightmare is wonderfully conceived and then it all gets weird. I suspect the author was indulging in plenty of his own snow as there are many references to cocaine abuse and the snow itself seems like a metaphor for the way modern-day London is seemingly awash with that nasty drug. But maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Jack and I read this together and I thought it was pretty interesting. Teddy would definitely have been on medication in this day and age! And his father's treatments for his boyhood asthma are so horrific -- carriage rides at full speed in the dead of winter, and then when that didn't work smoking cigars!
Before reading this book, I had no idea that the Pashu Headhunters Society in Burma is a derogatory name for the Freemasons. In addition, I acquired some knowledge about the Freemasons Lodges in Burma. The real highlight of the book is about the birth numbers/numerology and how it relates to a person's personality and mind-set. I checked out mine which is number 2 and I am amazed at how true it is. Another notable numerology technique is how many numbers are the most in your birth-date. It reads more like a non-fiction book than a novel. Min Thein Kha's books are highly readable as his writing is sharp, short-to-the-point and highly engaging. An interesting but a lesser-known work of Saya Min Thein Kha.
