This book would make an excellent movie. The only drawback is the excruciating detail the author provides of the vehicles used by the Brits and Germans during the north Africa campaign. An observation made by one of the Germans characterizes what has been written about the British during WWII. To paraphrase...you Brits think of yourselves as amateurs masquerading as warriors when in fact you are first class warriors. On a personal note, what I have to live with in terms of my chronic illness pales in comparison to what both sides endured in terms of injuries and illnesses during WWII.

reminds me how I should read "Smila's sense of snow" again. ALos glad I own this because I will have to listen to it again for sure to catch his great writing!! Makes me wish I knew more about music too.

This was a fun read! I just finished two Wally Lamb books that I really loved but they were pretty heavy. This was a perfect follow up. It reminded me of the Stephanie Plum series.

Strange yet powerful, coming-of-age, delightfully sweet in its own way. The part with the Mary in Chains story and celebration was a bit out-of-this-world, yet the sisters had really created a magically different place on Earth. I loved the bees' learnings too.

While I always enjoy Tad Williams' writing, this story didn't grip me the way his others have. I think it was because it was easy to become confused by the different forces behind people's motivations. There were many allusions to stories of what one family did to earn another's hatred, or stories of the gods that were so easy to mix up because of the different cultures had different names for each god...I kept feeling like I couldn't remember if I had read the stories being alluded to already and just forgot them. I kept wondering if the secrets were going to be revealed later or if, in forgetting, I was missing something crucial. All in all though, this came together for a compelling gallop through the last couple hundred pages. I was generally satisfied by the way things ended up, if not as invested as I usually am with Williams' books.
