This is another fabulous series by the equally fabulous Joyee Flynn! I just cannot get enough of this author. Ms. Flynn creates fantastical worlds like nobody’s business, and the world of the North American dragons is no exception. The world building is simply put extraordinary. I especially liked the idea of how the humans discovered dragons existed and their reaction to the information, which was very typical human nature. The emotional bond that builds between the four is written in such a way that you can literally feel what each character is feeling, particularly Dylan; his frustration with his inability to communicate verbally is brought home very well through description and his actions. While the bond seems to develop a bit more deeply and quickly with Dylan than with Bryce and Seth, at no time does the reader feel as if Todd loves them any less, or that Dylan is his favorite, which can sometimes happen in books with multiple partners. The sex and the emotions are deeply entwined in this story as well, making it a stellar read. I for one am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series, and I encourage anyone who enjoys excellent world building mixed with stellar m/m romance to pick up a copy of this and the first book in the series Dragon Mine today. Unselfconscious writing, but tedious for the first chapters which cover an intensely sensitive childhood and the dunghills of gossip from aged neurotic females of a repressed affluent society in Combray in the late 19th century. A sprinkling of beautiful moments - as mentioned by every reviewer - of which the "madeleine moment" was particularly underwhelming, and quickly snuffed-out by the eons of darkness cast by the aforementioned dunghill/mountain... and Proust's preference for paragraphs over sentences. I shut the book down for six months after regretting this first batch of self-harm, then motivated by my unwillingness to believe that my soul could not be illuminated by this behemoth - resumed the stuffing - and a disappointed masochist I was not. "A Love of Swann's" is a magnificent section; emotionally demanding, morally provocative, and with an enormous scope of a world which seemed as real as my own seems to myself.

I picked this book up last summer when Megan recommended it to me during a drunken trip to barnes & noble. My first attempt at reading it was an utter failure but I just finished the thing in 4 days (staying up until 3am to finish it last night). Part victorian gothic romance (a la the bronte's) and part detective novel , this was a whole lot of fun to read. Totally entertaining.

Hm. On the Far Side of the Mountain continues Sam's adventures from the first book, only with an added sister named Alice who is an interesting character, to say the least. At first it seemed as if the book was messy in direction--first there was the confiscation of Frightful, and suddenly the book switches gears to Alice heading off by herself with a pet pig (yes, a pet pig), and Sam's subsequent tracking down of Alice. While I liked the book well enough (or as well as I can like the Mountain books given some of my problems with them), there is quite a difference between the first and the second. While the first book was about Sam surviving and living his life mostly by himself, the second book is choke full of characters (new and returning), and it seems that more and more of modern life is creeping up on Sam though he may not like it. It's not necessary bad, but it's different, and the lack of Frightful is very apparent. 3 stars.

Loved it. The Mafia cliches were awesome. Their lines were completely cheesy kinda like a real bad movie - but i think that was the whole point Frost was trying to make. I'm trying to remember whether Frost had mentioned Chance in any of the previous books but i think not.
