My second favorite book! Sarah Gruen really did her research on such a strange yet fascinating part of history. She puts the reader right in there with the traveling circus. You can really feel how gritty, dirty, exciting, and fast paced this lifestyle was.
Utter bull****.

This book was fantastic don't get me wrong. But I personally like a book that leaves a little to the imagination.

Not the strongest in the Joe Gunther series. This was about when, in my opinion, Archer Mayor decided to start shaking things up. An ill-advised detour to Newark (is that redundant?) really detracts from the things I like about Mayor's novels. Also, the series is now "long-runnning" so there are parts where Mayor needs to bring possbile new readers up to speed. So, for example, when Willy Kunkle makes his first appearance, it seems Mayor cuts and pastes in the same explanation, in book after book. For me it's like, "Okay, here's the background on Gunther's first wife....skim ahead until the story picks up again" or "Okay, here is why Joe and Gail's relationship is explained as unconventional...glaze over and jump ahead." It also did not help that WAY too many New Jersey lowlifes, with no real distinguishing characteristics, keep popping up, in the action and in character's conversations and it was hard to keep them straight. And not really the strongest "mystery" Mayor has written, either.
I really enjoy this series. One of the little quotations on the cover of the first one (The Spellman Files) refers to it as Harriet the Spy for grownups, and I think that's true. It's funny, it's sweet, it's a mystery. Just fun. And apparently being developed into a movie. I just hope to hear more from the Spellmans!

Anyone whoever experienced teen angst even a little can relate.
Lovers of British lit. really should read Anne Bronte. She's not as popular as her two sisters, and while I admit "Agnes Grey" left a lot to be desired, this is a truly enjoyable read.
this book was heartbreaking, hopeful, and inspiring. the patterns are basic, so the items in this book probably aren't things i could get excited about wearing or making for my own use. however, what they lack in aesthetic quality, they more than make up for in usefulness and love. my new goal is to make at least one of each thing in this book to send to the charities that need them. i would also love to start a group for people interested in helping in this way. this book was truly inspiring.
