More often than not, I read books that are heavy and depressing. Typically, they are filled with troubled characters with troubled pasts and (inevitably) troubled and depressing futures. "Something Missing" is the exact opposite and because of that it is a very welcomed breath of fresh air! Matthew Dicks tells the story of a "friendly" thief, Martin, who calls those he steals from his "clients". He is a conscientious thief in that he only takes items that he knows the owner will not miss including potatoes, dish soap and the occassional diamond earring. To ensure that these items won't be missed, Martin reads his clients diaries, bank statements, and documents on their computers. In doing so, he becomes emotionally attached to his clients. Therefore, when he believes a client is in danger, he puts his career and life on the line to help. If there could ever be a noble thief, Martin is the man! His meticulous attention to detail while in his client's houses is astounding. I loved reading about how he acquired clients and the reasoning behind his choosing certain households. As Martin develops emotionally, it is heart-warming to see him reach outside of his bubble. This is the perfect read because it is quirky, fun, and light without being shallow or insipid. I urge all of you to find this book and take a chance...I doubt that you will be disappointed. www.iamliteraryaddicted.blogspot.com

I could have used more love scenes but the story was pretty good.

I love that my book club makes me pick up books that I would have passed over in normal circumstances. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t — this is one of the times it worked for me. I really enjoyed Honolulu. In a way, this was written to showcase some of the different things that happened during this time in Hawaii’s history — the Korean picture brides, the life on sugar plantations, the life and deaths of a local boy accused of murder and a Chinese policeman, the “red light” district of Honolulu, and the creation of the aloha shirt. While some of it felt a little contrived, I thought Brennert did a great job weaving in all of these true stories within his fictional tale. Sometimes I’ve feel like men have a hard time writing female protagonists (see: Memoirs of a Geisha), but Brennert managed to capture Jin’s stoic Korean personality perfectly. LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I lost so much sleep finishing it but I couldn't sleep at any point in the story because every page was awesome! Just as good as, if not better than the first book! I must say, my allegiance to Team Ren was tested. Kishan's certainly amazing. This cliffhanger is torturing me! I cried at the end! I MUST know what happens now! November 1st can't come soon enough! :D 10 out of 5 stars! I smell an epic movie in the future...
OK.. I have to say I was a bit disappointed by this book... while the idea behind it is lovely (I have used it a number of times with my adolescents/young women at work, to facilitate their thought process in the context of therapy), it's just not exactly full of the earth shattering wisdom that you would expect from such prominent female figures... and while we're speaking of prominent figures, i have to also say that the hodgepodge of women selected to be a part of this collection felt quite random to me..
Post-modern fiction at its best. DeLillo dominates!

The Kite Runner proved to me that my heart could be broken more than once over the course of a single book. I highly recommend it, I plan on reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns", his second book, and if you want to read more of what I have to say on The Kite Runner, read my blog:

Laughed and cried my way all the way through it. Ryan is such a character and he just makes you laugh all the way through. He is so incredible; he accomplished so much! Not just in fighting the prejudice against people with AIDS, but in everything he did; skateboarding and acting, giving speeches, comforting and educating people who were scared of AIDS. At 16 he was driving his own car and working in a skate shop, after being told he probably had about 6 months to live when he was 13. I know plenty of 16 year old kids who don't accomplish driving and working at that age. This kid was never stopped by his body until the last two weeks of his life. He has a phenomenal mother, that was part of it, she is terrific, and so is his sister and his unmarried step dad. But sometimes a person is just really special and Ryan, even though he just wanted to be a normal kid, was really extraordinary. Less said about Kokomo the better I guess, but SNAP! Those idiots.

undoubtedly great, but tough to read in long stretches. I find it hard to refocus on more than 2-3 stories in one sitting, no mater how short.
A large, colorfully illustrated (with line drawings) encyclopedia of an imaginary land, written in an imaginary language (the numbering system for the pages has been decoded, but there's still debate over whether the script throughout the book is meaningful or not) Outrageous surrealism combined with a clean, orderly structure that thus makes it more disturbing and intriguing than outright surrealism. Beautiful, mind-bending, and worth any price you have to pay for it.
