I finished this book in two days, and while I did like it at first, the other half turned me down. TYPICAL SORT-OF CLICHE CHICK-FLICK BOOK! The good part: Okay, so basically the start was pretty good. I totally can relate to Anna, who was sent off to boarding school, and she was so insecure. She feels weird of walking into a cafeteria alone, she hides in her room and dares not go out, and especially, I love her description of the School of America. From the description of the book, it sounds like a very nice school, and students got to drink coffee at breakfast, and they even had a cafeteria that sort of look like restaurant. In the weekend, you can go out and look at these beautiful European city with a lot of historical monuments, and watch French films! That sounds so history-esque and romantic. My excitement was roused up, sure this will be a good book, because there seems to hint of something deep: 1. Anna comments and seemingly bad relationship with her family 2. Her friends are sort-of interesting 3. St.Clair did have that charm that made the girl inside me sort of wanting to have a crush on. 4. And Gosh, this book is set in Paris, which is famous for art galleries, poetry, auteur film, French pastry, and hell, I love the French Revolution! Things took a little downward when we are introduced to our main character's crush - Mr. Etienne St.Clair. Yeah, he's sexy, cute, sort of bookish, super-friendly, and after all, that cliche British-accent!, and he seems to be genuinely interested in Anna! Okay, but why the seemingly most perfect guy on Earth got crushes on the MC? It's not like she stands out or anything. He said she is funny and smart (which I don't think so given the fact she spelled o-u-i as w-e-e), so I was pretty confused. I got this nagging that maybe the plot demands it, as it is with every YA romance that the hottest guy (whose girls wish they could have), the most perfect guy (who girls fight over for), will always fall for the MC. Why? Why? Why? But again, the point of a YA romance is not about making sense, it's about all these cute description about how his eyebrow arched when she is doing something cute and funny, and how he winked and bowed and make the main character blush. So, my teeny part inside me said - Geesh, stop being so judgmental and just have a fun ride with this book , because after all, I know what chick-flick is about and I did not pick up this in expectancy of an intelligent and deep philosophical epiphany. So I happily put the urge away and ride along. Which I feel bad I did, because here are the bad things: 1. The way the Anna treated her best friend, Bridgette! This is like the most ridiculous portrayal in the book, when Anna became angry with Bridgette because she dates her not-really-boyfriend Tolph. Okay, man, I know it is disappointed when the guy you have a crush on likes your best friend better than you, but that is no reason to start acting trashy towards your friend. Anna, after hearing the news, became angry, refuse to talk to Bridgette, who genuinely attempts to explain this awkward situation. Anna just becomes angry for no reason, and start to complain why her life suck and why her best friend betrays her! What the fuck, man! First, you and Tolph wasn't even officially dating. Second, you do not put someone you love for years - a best friend, over a dude you just got a crush on for like a year. Third, get a grip on yourself - it's not the end of the world, especially you know a hot British dude is eyeing on you! First world problem 2. I totally skip the whole part about Anna v. Dave relationship : God, ANNA, I want to slap her in the face! I hate those old cliches when two people misunderstand each other for a small, tiny thing (which could be resolve by just sitting down and talking), and start doing stupid things. That is the dumb, stereotypical today teen. I am sick of reading about books where girls start making out with random guys just to prove that they are not hurt. It is so cliche and shallow, I swear!!!! I really just want to drown Anna down a well like the girl from Ring when she deliberately hurt St.Clair by start kissing that Dave guy? Wtf? She didn't even like him in the first place. And she just let him kiss her and let him taking into his room and nearly doing you-know-what. It showed that our main character is just a dumb-ass who can't think rationally. 3. Girl-on-girl hate : Amanda, period. The girl is the most stereotypical version of mean-girl. She called our MC skunk, attempts to seduce St.Clair, and keep flashing warning signs whenever Anna is with Etienne. Wtf, man???? Like, I swear, I don't think mean girls even exist in the real world. This is just to prove that Anna is the best, the most deserving girl for Etienne . By degrading other characters - such as Amanda and Ellie, the author wants to prove that Anna is very cute and innocent and all holy. Give me a bucket for my puke. AND THIS : is what Anna thought of his girlfriend - even though his girlfriend was friendly and nice towards her on their first meeting: I fantasize about their breakup. How he could hurt her, and she could hurt him, and all of the ways I could hurt her back. I want to grab her Parisian-styled hair and yank it so hard it rips from her skull. I want to sink my claws into her eyeballs and scrape. Somebody better called a psychiatrist here, because Anna is going to kill somebody just because she dates St.Clair!!!! 4. Too much drama, tears, and cries over stupid problems - like oh, I am dying, because my bff is dating with my bf, or god, why don't Etienne told me he still dates Ellie? Yeah, do you need a pat, Anna? There are so many parts of the story that would have been better: 1. Explore further the relationship between Etienne abusive dad and mom 2. Resolve the conflict between MC and her dad. 3. Rash is a pretty interesting character, especially when her sister joined Amanda, and how her parents kept forcing her to become a valedictorian like her older sister, and her brother was bullied. God, I would like that story better than Etienne and Anna gushing over each other for like the 900000th time. Overall rating: Meh. I like it partly, it does make me swoon and stay up at night to devour every word. But after finish it, I was like - That's it? That is so predictable. I guess I am one of the most cynical and bitterest book critics out there, and I am not tolerable to first-world problem people who complain of their fathers because he sent them to a boarding school. Thank you very much, but my father still stuck in Vietnam working like crazy and earn only $20,000 per year. Recommended to people who love a nice, short chick-flick. This book is still much better than other shitty, cheap chick-flicks out there.
