Another free Kindle book. I liked it but not enough to want to pay to finish the series.

It seems like the author took some liberties with the material, yet as a reader I didn't mind. He gave his insight on what HE thought - as an educated person on Washington - what Washington would have thought or felt. I am just fascinated with Washington - this book really shows him for a man - one with faults - and brings to life a sliver of the past. It also helped that I had seen the John Adams mini series recently - since I could see the same events through different eyes. Truly, the founding fathers were not perfect, were not always co-operative, but they were just what this country needed at that exact moment in time. After reading this book I have no doubt that God placed these men - imperfect men - to do the impossible.
Fern Michaels is an author I’ve always respected. I enjoy her books and believe that every story that she has given us has been a gift. Her stories are touching and thoughtful. I was very excited to have a chance to read this book. However, I had problems connecting with the characters. Their lack of empathy and judgmental attitudes made them hard to sympathize with. The characters spend a lot of time insulting each other and even the “good” people in the story seemed malicious. I felt the storyline was missing critical information, such as character development. The timeline seemed to jump forward and leave out too much of the story. I was very surprised that this was written by Fern Michaels. Please don’t let this be a deterrent to reading Fern Michaels other books. She’s a great author and deserves her reputation.

Oak Cliff: A Tale of Darkness and Despair was the first book I have read by this author, but it definitely won't be my last. I was pulled in from the first page by the unique and intriguing way the author chose to weave this story. The story is told from the perspective of the Oak Cliff farmhouse. Starting in the Civil War era and ending in the present day, I was carried throughout history with Oak Cliff's powerful and heart-wrenching stories of those who lived within it's walls. The accounts of love, sorrow, despair, and evil will keep you enthralled till the very end. You will never look at a house in the same way again. I highly recommend this very well-written novel by Marion Marchetto and look forward to reading more of her works.

I read this with my daughter as part of her British Lit class. It was challenging at times to follow the story, but I ended up actually liking it and some of the messages it contains.

I had high hopes for this book, and remember the buzz around it before I left NYC. But once I finally read it, I thought it was just another chick lit novel not in the same category as a Marian Keyes or even Jennifer Weiner.
