I admit to throwing this book against the wall when I finished it. But, it has haunted me with images that I will not soon forget. It's brilliant, poignant and probably the most realistic and fanciful story about depression I've ever read.

This is not my normal kind of book, spys, espionage etc. I think I had picked this one up years ago at a UBS after I'd seen the movie "First Blood" then read the book. I know I liked that book. I had totally expected to get bored with this one and give up on it but I was proved wrong! It was a very thrilling book that held my interest all the way through. It's about 2 brothers who were orphans and kind of adopted by Eliot. He was like a father to the boys and trained them to be operatives. When both boys are being hunted by their "father" to be killed, they turn the tables.
Amazingly funny read. The description of his swim in the cove when the islander took a squat in the water next to him was my favorite part. Would recommend this to anyone who loves travel and adventure.
The History of Love, a novel within an novel, champions the idea of enduring love and connection. Three storylines—a retired locksmith in New York, a teenager named after the protagonist of the title novel, and a Polish-Chilean writer— are slowly woven together, entreating the reader to discover the connection between them. Nicole Krauss does an admirable job keeping those voices distinct and playing with inventive forms (for example, the teenager's chapters are formatted with numbered headlines). However, I didn't find one of the major characters sympathetic and didn't care for the short sentence fragments that dot his chapters. Although the connection is realized in the end, it seemed anticlimactic as the other interesting characters that Krauss has created are swept aside for the moment of the All-Important-Connection. The story collapsed into being about the life of that one character. Overall, it was an interesting read.
I'm not sure where to put this one. It's not quite fantasy, but it does involve some time travel and has John Lennon coming back to life. It also has some qualities of a literary novel. It's actually got a bit of everything in it. Definitely an interesting slipstream kind of a novel.
Very helpful and accessible book, based on research and experience.
I love John Irving and I love Owen Meany! One of my favorites of all time.
Fascinatingly creative style of storytelling. The poetic use of metaphor is engaging, and the end-notes make the story seem real, while at the same time pulling the reader out of the main story just enough to question what is real, and to ponder the nature of (as Joanne Wilkinson said) "outward appearances and the role of self-deception." To make sense of this novel, you have to look beyond face value - who are these characters, really? And how much of our own memory is borrowed?

Re-read this for a "creative non-fiction" essay that I'm working on: Sophocles is good, and this is something I undoubtedly failed to realize while reading it in high school. Kreon is a dick, and a sort of realistic sense of obnoxiousness shines through in this translation (as opposed to the performative nature of his speech that is generally found), but everything else I like lots more in this translation, so I am willing to overlook that.

I enjoyed this but definitely expected something more. This book was far too short to capture the full issue of institutionalizing women who were too "unconventional." I enjoyed reading about Esme and Kitty but didn't care at all about the modern story. I felt that Kate Morton could have written a better novel on this subject as she manages the dual narratives very well, and in much more depth. I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy this story, just that it wasn't developed enough and had so much more in it that could have been explored. I felt a bit let down as I'd heard so many good things about this novel. I would be interested in reading more books in this subject, but feel that there just isn't enough to this particular story. 7/10
