The glorious 80s! Too bad that, as a primary school kid, I only remember them vaguely. Nevertheless, reading The Informers set in motion waves of nostalgia, for Bananarama, The Bangles, Duran Duran, two Star Wars movies… happy days! What would the characters in Ellis’ book say to that? Probably “mellow out”, or something similar. It seems that to remain calm and happy (if you can define “happy” as reaching sexual and drug-induced highs) is their only objective. While reading the book, I kept expecting to find some kind of meaningful cohesion between the different chapters. I thought that I’d spotted a few links, but then again, Ellis could be using the same name for different people, couldn’t he? Continue reading the book & movie review on my blog.

This book is insane and not easy to stick with. It follows a fictitious baseball team in a fictitious baseball league during WW2. The characters, narrator, and plot twists are unbelievable, comedic, sarcastic. It is a kind of commentary on society at that time. Philip Roth is an amazing writer and I think he had to get things out of his system before reaching the consistent plateau he has been on. After reading this, The Breast and his Nixon book (Our Gang), I decided to skip a lot of his early/middle books and read some more recent ones. Currently reading American Pastoral, which is a masterpiece. I also read the Human Stain--also phenomenal. Anyway, I will go back and read some of his earlier output (already read Portnoy's Complaint, the Zuckerman books, etc.) once I finish the books that are recognized as his greatest achievements. IMHO, don't read this unless you are already a big Philip Roth fan and are willing to forgive some nutty excursions.

Only one word for this book, epic.
I thought this book was awful. I kept hoping it would get better, but it never did. Don't waste your time on this one.
I received this book for review from the author. I did not receive any compensation for my review, and the views expressed herein are my own. I read this book aloud to my children. I love the name of the rabbit, Howard B. Wigglebottom. It's cute, it's funny, and accurately describes my kids who can't seem to sit still! The book starts off funny and entertaining as we see the different ways that Howard likes to fix things. It takes on a little bit more of a serious tone when Howard find his best friend, Ali, crying. She is sad because her parents have been fighting a lot, and she feels as if it is all her fault. Howard wants desperately to "fix it," but doesn't know how. Not knowing what to do, he sits with Ali every day and just listens while she talks. Howard doesn't even realize that what he is doing is helping Ali! Howard talks to his mom about Ali's situation, and she has very sage advice for Howard, telling him that sometimes parents do fight and that it is NEVER the child's fault. Furthermore, she reassures Howard that he is doing what Ali needs most: He is being a friend. Even though we cannot always fix things, we can change the way we think and feel about it. The moral of the story is: "Howard learned that sometimes life gives you RAINBOWS and sometimes you get MUD! So if you find yourself headfirst in mud and you can't change it, you have choices. You can be unhappy about it... or make the best of it." I loved this book! I thought the message was inspiring and very thought-provoking. It is not just a message for children, but for adults as well. Binkow includes suggestions for lessons and reflections at the back of the book, and I spent quite a while discussing the book with my kids. Sometimes, children will hear their parents fight, and Binkow reassures children that it is okay to feel upset but that they should know that it is never their fault. Howard is an excellent role model, and I loved seeing his concern for Ali and want to try to help her. He comforted Ali, which is exactly what I would want my kids to do for a friend. Cornelison brought Howard to life with her colourful illustrations. They are just wonderful and capture the essence of Howard beautifully. There is one illustration in particular on Page 23 where we see Howard and Ali from behind, sitting down. Howard has his arm around Ali's shoulders, and he is listening to her as she talks. That picture made me smile, and I was very touched by it. Even though the synopsis suggests that this book is intended for children aged 4-8, I think this book is suitable for a child of any age. Both my 3 year-old and 9 year-old loved the book. Although this is Book #4 of the series, each story is independent and can be read out of order. I am looking forward to reading more Howard B. Wigglebottom books! MY RATING: 5 stars!! We loved it! Highly recommended for kids!

Sarah Vowell is one funny lady. She enjoys doing really out there, old person type stuff like going to graveyards and to the site of presidential assassinations. There were moments of laugh out loud in this book and I learned more about US presidential assassinations than I wanted, but a fun and engaging historical read.

A nice quick read. I wish it would have had a longer epilogue.

Great book about globalization. The only thing is that it was written pre-September 11th and some aspects of the world have since changed. Enjoyable book.
Joan Didion wastes no words. This novel is slim because she only says what must be said, and the reader must make the connections and draw the conclusions. It starts at the end with a few chapters from the points of view of other characters, then shifts into the story from Maria Wyeth's point of view. It is a picture of a depressed woman in a fake society, late 1960s Los Angeles and Las Vegas. An era with drugs and sex, movie stars in the desert and psychiatric hospitals for children, but no access to legal abortion. (That requires a sidenote - is this the first novel I've read where the main character has an abortion? I can't think of another one. Isn't that strange, considering how many women have them? And since this one was under the table it was pretty difficult to read those parts, with the trauma to her body. Her psyche was already messed up.) I had only read a few things of Didion before but I have this feeling that I will like her more and more as I age. I read The Year of Magical Thinking before I'd experienced any grief of my own. Oh how the reading experience would change just five years later. We studied the essay "The White Album" from the collection of essays The White Album when I took the creative non-fiction class and I knew I had to read more of her. She is not afraid to write what nobody else will say and she never sugar coats it.
