I liked this. And then I saw the movie and loved that. It was a soothing read despite the usual incest/racial divisiveness and bittersweet reconciliation. So please by all means, read the book. Then you simply MUST rent the movie

If you haven’t figured out by now, I own pretty much every Meg Cabot book (with a few exceptions; generally it’s almost every YA or adult novel of hers). I love Avalon High as much as I do the Princess Diaries series. It’s a great stand-alone novel with varied characters and a plot that really comes into its own. Ellie is a fantastic heroine. She can stand up for herself without relying on Will, she tries to see the best in everyone, and once she’s informed about the cycle of reincarnation, instead of just letting things take place, she’s the one who decides to take matter into her own hands. I like Will, he’s just an all-around nice guy. There’s a sense of melancholy and frustration around him, especially when he finds out the truth about his family and Jenifer and Lance’s relationship, but he’s also got an inner strength. Jenifer’s an interesting character in that she should be the bitchy popular cheerleader, but she’s actually nice to Ellie and the other side characters. Which is a great break from a lot of Meg Cabot’s other books, I really like the fact that she and Ellie can be friends. Unfortunately, she’s also not really given much to do, aside from being a supportive girlfriend. Which is one of my big problems with the book as a whole; the minor characters aren’t as well-developed as Ellie or Will. The King Arthur reincarnation plot is actually well done, despite the massive liberties taken with the mythology. (She does point out the various differences between the texts, so I tend to give this a pass.) Aside from the OBVIOUS NAMES ARE OBVIOUS, I rather liked the use of Arthurian legend fitting into modern-day America. It manages to fit in fairly well, and again, despite a few handwaves, it doesn’t feel overtly forced. If I had to nitpick anything on the plot, I do think the pacing is a little rushed. The last half of the book takes place over the course of one afternoon. I would have liked to have seen the plot stretch out over a few days, instead of “Must do the big climax right now!” There’s not much tension toward the end, and more drawn out climax would have been fantastic. In spite of the flaws, I still love this book. It’s one of my favorite light fantasy YA novels to recommend to people and a shining example of how well Meg Cabot can write.

A friend recommended Land of Men to me. First a little background. Growing up in N.Y., the son of a Vietnamese Father and a Hawaiian Mother I was tormented with being called a gook, a jap and worse by other kids. Even after all these years that cruelty remained with me throughout my life. After reading Land of Men I learned the Marquesians and Hawaiians share a common lineage. Maybe because my mother is Hawaiian I have a special place in my heart for this book. It explained and defended a culture that was taken from these people by force. Just like in Hawaii. The author presented these people as human. In a nutshell I would say that after reading this book I felt proud to be who I am. Peter

With no travel plans to exotic locales in line this year, what better book to read than a series of travel essays by a poet? Ted Hughes gives it two thumbs up. Need I say more?

this was a hard book to get into. I felt I was dropped into the 3rd chapter without any setup, and from there took me to 1/3 of the way before I could feel I was following the story. That said, once there I quickly carried on and finished it.

To be fair, my experience with this book was through an abridged audio version. Perhaps some key elements were left out that would have made it more compelling for me. It just felt a little disjointed to me. Ultimately I really enjoyed the premise though, and would recommend it to others.

Well written and surprisingly funny at points, Bhattacharya's in depth investigation of various polygamous Mormon sects in Utah is definitely worth a read for anyone interested in modern Mormonism, fundamentalism, and religious life in America. Hardly as sensational as Jon Krakauer's similar themed "Under the Banner of Heaven", Sanjiv Bhattacharya seems determined to remain objective and is present throughout the work as both a narrator and investigator. For the most part, his detachment is successful, although at times his frustrations with the secrecy of polygamy and disgust with the practices of certain groups and practitioners is evident. I regret that the book did not include more interviews with various independent practitioners and other major sects, and at times I wished the narrator/author was not as present in the arc of the book. Overall an engrossing and interesting read, if at times it read a bit like a long magazine article.

In the introduction to the Bachman Books, Stephen King describes Bachman as a 'not so nice guy'; and if "The Long Walk" isn't prove of that then you really don't know any nice people. In this very dark Novella the Bachman in King comes out and it kills everything in its wake. Brilliantly written with twists one can only suspect of King/Bachman this novella will leave you chilled to the bone - or maybe deeper. I don’t believe King need anymore praise - you're either a fan or not. If you are and haven't read The Long Walk yet, you are missing out!

The premise of this book is that you should feel free enough to make a fool of yourself and that perfect freedom/understanding/love/etc. comes when you can do that. I'm not opposed to the lesson or the sentiment; I'll even agree with it -- it's just that I think most of the time parables such as this make rather tendentious reading - characters are created and animated just to make a point. The person who recommended it to me found it meaningful; it just didn't work for me. zzzzzzzz
Since the goodreads listing doesn't give very much information, read more about the issue here http://store.mcsweeneys.net/index.cfm... The first book of three features story premises from F. Scott Fitzgerald as fleshed out by various authors. There's a contribution from Salvador Plascencia that's just wonderful.
