** spoiler alert ** OMG!!!! So amazing but a horrible series end? We need a 6th book!!! Like this if you agree! Also for all the people saying that they seemed to old I understand where you're coming from but I think that Gregor and Luxa were forced to endure hardships none of us could comprehend at a very early age therefore making them far more mature than any regular children their age. We can't even classify them or compare them to children around us because none of us have done anything close to the things they've done. No regular 12 year old has had to fight in a war or go on quests and things like that. Also the whole Gluxa thing, the same applies. Gregor and Luxa were taught to appreciate the life they had and the time they were given so when they were given an opportunity they took it. They both thought they were going to die so they did what they thought they never would get to do again. And one more thing... I just can't imagine Gregor or Luxa with anyone else. I know it's unrealistic that they are truly in love, but that's what ficiton is for!

It confused me a little, and I had to consult the page at the front to keep the characters straight, but it was a really engaging book. It made me examine my own mother/daughter relationship. Tan does an excellent job creating rich and singular characters. This is a good read.

An enjoyable read. Many parallels with current issues. I had a really hard time deciding whether to give 3 or 4 stars. Ultimately I decided on 3 because while I found the ideas and information compelling, I didn't love the actual story.

The three-star rating is from when I read this as a ten-year-old. When I tried to read it again as a fourteen-year-old, I got bored and returned it to the library after the first chapter. The plot is interesting, and if it were two hundred pages shorter, it might have potential. Especially if it had been written by another author. But it really isn't that great. If you must read a Cornelia Funke novel, read The Thief Lord.
