A little book from which you may be able to glean the basics behind Tibetan Buddhism and the Dalai Lama. It's about 5 inches square, and there's nothing hard hitting about it. And, as I soon found out by picking up another, slightly larger book with the Dalai Lama's face on it, there's nothing original about it, either. I've always felt, if you're going to learn about something, why not "from the horse's mouth? But the idea that His Holiness poured his heart and soul into this one little anonymous book, only to write another -- and then another -- quite a bit like it... Silly. This book is silly. I only read it because I won it in a drawing here at Goodreads. I'm only reviewing it because I want to win more and the little bar on the right says my chances go up if I review past winnings, since that's the whole reason they give out books in the first place. I hope, on account of this little confessional, the publishers will spare me, give me more books to read. Considering the book... well, I hope so.
when i read this book in college (thank you david young) i didn't know it would have such staying power. there are images from it that pop into my head at odd times. it's like having a spoonful of paint flung into your mind.

Not a very faithful retelling of the film (which I adore), but does expand on some details not established in the movie. In fact, the book gives a rather drastically altered sequence of events, apparently adapted from the original script. A lot of the aesthetic is lost, and the characters are different and less vibrant. Also, the dialogue is forced and only a few lines resonate from the original motion picture. It's a very quick read, with a sweet message, and a gentle humour. The writing is a little bland, and nothing other than Penelope's appearance is ever distinguished or described, but if you've watched the movie and you're looking for a feel good modern fairytale it's worth a pick-up.

This was an amazing book. Much more mature than Twilight-not as heavy as Anne Rice. It was more for the 25+++ Adults like me ( 30 something). I enjoyed the reality of the science aspects, as well as historical. The characters are well developed-although I feel that Miriam was not explained fully. The courtship and romance between Diana and Matthew were spine tingling. What a way to keep you on the edge romance-screaming for more! The end started to be soo exciting with near death experiences, and discoveries of Ashmole 782............but I threw the book across the room upon reading the last page. Very disapointing, let down, anti-climatic, unanswered questions---I could go on all day. I know I will love this series now that I know it is a trilogy! Definately read it!
Fun, fast read. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Okay, so it wasn't mind blowing and there weren't loads of serious facts and figures about immigration, but this was a humourous take on a situation based on reality. We all know it happens but the way Marina has written it, a buxom, somewhat cheap, tarty but somehow seductive Ukranian 'divorcee' marrying an eccentric former Ukranian refugee who has established and legal British roots, just so she can get a passport and money, gives you a laugh whilst at the same time makes you realise that actually people will go to any length sometimes for the chance of a 'better life', though that better life very much depends on the person you are! Marina hasn't gone into any great political detail although her brief accounts of life pre and post war in Ukraine do have the desired shock factor and educate you which I think has more of an effect than some long winded spiel. I think she has brought together a story of human understanding through a funny and well written tale that nevertheless has a sting in its tale - whether you choose to acknowledge that sting is up to the reader. The characters are well described through their voices, characteristics and habits and bring the story to life. I certainly think Marina has a genius for the eccentric character and for understanding of the human character.

I think I listened to this one on tape/cd and wasn't that impressed. Didn't leave me feeling the way so many felt. I don't know.

This is a fun twist on the Phoenix/Shi'ar premise from the classic X-Men comics.
