Beautiful , inspiring and sweet. Love the scripture at the end of the book. Well done Tawnya!

Jacobs challenges the paradigm of the nation as the most appropriate unit of organization for economies, and promotes that of the city or city region. A compelling case for city-states as a primary basis for economic life. Her arguments about 'transactions of decline' (Chapter 12) and the idea of an 'esthetics of drift' (Chapter 14) especially resonated with me. Maybe Obama--instead mythologizing the importance of being one nation--should be advocating for a continent of multiple sovereignties that make up a network of vigorous inter-city trade--promoting economic development defined as 'a process of continually improvising in a context that makes injecting improvisations into everyday life feasible.'

Frustrating it was incomplete but still thought it was amazing enough to have read it twice..

Both the style and topic held me riveted. Plath wrote this in such a way that the reader is drawn into the mind of Esther and sees a nervous breakdown from the inside.

** spoiler alert ** Definitely one of my all-time favorites!!! I want to say some things about the ending. 1. Robert and Gloria are reincarnations of two people Dougless met in the past... and her realizing it when she got back in the 21st century... Ummm, not realizing really but it was just her 'idea' right?. 2. Nicholas and Dougless did not end up together. She was left with his "soul" instead... In the form of Reed Colin, Nicholas' descendant?? reincarnation??? Maybe the latter because the reincarnation was mentioned in the book. (see number 1) 4. The two miniature portraits; Dougless portrait was bought by Reed when he was 11, and Nicholas' obtained by Dougless. It would have been great if Dougless also showed the miniature she has of Nicholas to Reed, but I guess at some point in their lives she would... I'll just use my imagination. 5. The ending was gripping and hanging... with that dinner and all. I mean, there could've been a nice sweet ending; a happily ever after once and for all, because an invitation to dinner would not say much about the two of them (Yes, because I believe that Reed and Nicholas are one and the same person). 6. Last but not the least: Where's the epilogue when you need one??? I'm quite a sucker for happy endings...!! =p
This is the first book that I have read recently that didn't remind me of another story-line or plot. The fact that it was such a new/foreign concept kept me rather engaged. There were several times when I fought to put it down. I have a hard time describing this book to others without giving away key moments, or highlights of the story....so I will not attempt to do so now. Going to begin the next in the series!

I've read the whole series. I've enjoyed Douglas Adams writing since high school. I find his attitudes toward God a bit unsettling. But he definitely pokes fun at everyone.

Good book! I especially enjoyed Part II on the "Biology of Belief". It went into great detail on how beliefs are formed in the brain. It could have been very dry, but Shermer managed to make it come alive. Chapter 12 on "Confirmations of Belief" was also very interesting.

I enjoyed his story telling and the subject matter of cloning and gene therapy, but I didn't feel like the multiple story lines really came together at the end.
