This is another story of a talented, complicated soul with a biographical arc that begins in hardship and poverty moves through hard won success and then ends tragically with dissolution. This book was written by three people who talk and write about the blues a lot and frankly, parts of the biography suffers from it. It is dense with arcane analysis of techniques used during studio sessions. Sometimes it seemed as if the authors were trying to draw a conclusion from some minutia found on a master tape from 50 years ago and fit it into a thing of broader significance in Little Walter's life. That said, this bio is an insightful look into an incredibly talented, influential musician. Some interesting nuggets that stuck with me that show this man was full of incongruity: Little Walter was a tough, hard drinking, rough smoking blues musician and a pimp (like, literally) who also enjoyed playing chess and Lawrence Welk.

What a fun read. I liked it from start to finish! What a fun concept. A guy gets bet that he can't go on two dates with each of 3 girls who are roommates---without them knowing they are dating the same guy. He, of course, finds himself really liking one of the three. But how do you explain to a girl that you were dating her friends at the same time & on a bet, no less?

This is a really great play that takes two minor characters from Hamlet and turns them into the heroes, to get another perpective of Shakespere's classic. Obviously much more enjoyable if you're familiar with Hamlet, especially since Stoppard incorporates verbatim lines of Shakespeare into the modern speech of his characters. Terribly funny even with the obviously tragic ending.

I almost didn't finish this. At about 1/3 of the way through I started thinking, "I'm bored" on every page but the story picked up eventually and I made it to the end. That being said, I'm not sure this was a great idea for a novel of historical fiction. Or maybe it was just the execution I didn't like. Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot were real women who made great scientific advancements for their time. Chevalier did a great job showing the predjudice they faced from educated men and people in general who thought it was weird, two women running around a beach picking up bones. What didn't come off so well was the portrayal of their personal lives. The people of Lyme focus their scorn on Mary, a poor girl from a working family. You'd think they'd be impressed she used her fossils to make money and pay off her family's debts. Elizabeth had a different struggle. From a 'good' family, her fossil habit was considered odd but I got tired of her relatives constant put downs against her for having a hobby. Maybe that was accurate but it got tedious to read about. Still this book made me very interested in the history of fossil collection. I look forward to visiting the skeletons both these ladies dug up when I go to London on a trip.

Gotta love a book where the happy ending comes halfway through, and the remaining 300 pages have the protagonist talking about how happy she is. Happy, mind, that she got to marry the guy that lied to her over and over, violated her privacy, wrote to her parents about how well she was being treated, and locked her away with a housemaid that verbally and physically abused her and later held her down as this guy attempted to sexually assault her. But for some pretty dresses, mansions, servants and... more money than I can count.... yeah maybe I'd put up with that too.

This is the first Sci-fi book I read. Verdict? I really enjoyed it. This book captured my interest from the first pages. The way the author describes the experience of being frozen alive was scary. I remember pulling my blanket and shivering at the idea. Amy is an extremely brave girl, I cannot imagine volunteering to be frozen after I seeing how horrible and painful it is. The dual narrative was great in this book. I like knowing what the characters are thinking and it was especially nice to read about the same event from two perspectives. I was able to see Godspeed and its inhabitants as an outsider and also as their future leader. This allowed for me to care about the people but also see their dark side. There was a scene that I almost put the book down because I was literally scared and disgusted but it showed how inhuman people can become. The story kept me interested and eager to discover Godspeed's secrets. I admit, I wanted Amy to finally notice how awesome Elder is but the story also kept me reading. I love when books shock me, and this one has a few twists that left me reading with my mouth open in shock. I like knowing why characters behave the way the do and what leads them to become who they are. So I was a little disappointed that the reasons behind Eldest and some other character's actions where not explained. Hopefully, more will be explained in the next installment of the series. I will definitely take another journey aboard Godspeed, a spaceship full of secrets, hope, and love.

Love this book. It's a great story that you can pick up anywhere and not get lost, but also read from cover to cover and get a great idea of the fight for central asia between the raj and the russians.

(For my overall thoughts read my comments on the NIV bible.) Be sure to get the original, not the more recently made printings, especially the 'New Jerusalem' bible. Primarily because I have found this particular translation to be fluid in its prose, graceful in its poetry, and as comprehensive as can be had in a one volume translation of the entire christian scriptures. If I could have one bible translation, this would be it.
