I never finished this book and left it in Uganda among the things that wouldn't fit in my bag. I guess that says a lot. It was very interesting in parts, but in general I had to try hard to keep myself interested. I am interested in the history of coffee, but not so much in the travels of the author (which seemed unbelievable to me).

The Archer’s Tale is the first in Bernard Cornwell’s The Grail Trilogy. The books follow Thomas of Hookton and English longbow man fighting in France in the year 1342. The three books eventually do get into the whole Grail Quest story. There is almost zero “magic” in these books i.e. no finding any multi-century old Templar guarding a grail that heals all wounds a la last crusade, and there is no “The Grail is actually the blood line of Christ” crap like the Davinci Code. The story is set firmly in the blood and guts reality of the100 war. All in all another series from one of the best historical novelists currently writing.

I’ve seen in negative reviews for this book that there are complaints of pointless dialogs and tangents. But I realized early on in Book Two that the author is treating each character and aspect of the story as it’s own little novel. So from the homeless guy who you know is going to be dead in mere seconds because he just disrupted the arm’s resting place, to the retarded boy who will laughingly witness his loving brother’s brutal death, to the history of the founding of a strange and seemingly aimless but popular new religion, you will get life stories, explanations of theology, intimate insights into character’s personalities, etc. There are many mini stories inside the main story. Perhaps people become frustrated because we will never hear of the homeless man and the retarded boy again and it seems pointless but what the author is doing is drawing a picture of a town, a broken society, and the individuals that live in it. The main story isn’t the entire point in this book. What you’re experiencing is many little books inside of a larger one, each having it’s own purpose, just as we have our own complete stories inside the stories of the places and societies we live in - hell, the world we live in. I really enjoy this writing style and hope it is appreciated by future readers and not so misunderstood.

I had to read this book after a couple friends recommended it because apparently I'm an angry feminist when it comes to the Roman Catholic Church. I admit that I am angry and have no idea how to channel it. I like Carolyn's methodology and sympathize with her theology, but I still struggle with the burden of the cross that she proposes is both a source of suffering and liberation for all those oppressed, women specifically in (North American, white) feminist liberation theology. I understand the theology behind the cross, but I struggle to intellectually understand the fine line between bearing the burden and simply being passive in the face of oppression. Sure it's more difficult to forgive your "enemies" and takes a decent amount of maturity, strength and courage to transform them, but how do you know if that's what you're in fact acheiving or if all that energy is having no effect whatsoever and instead you're just enduring oppression and changing nothing? Carolyn addresses my impatience to change the institution already, but it doesn't help pacify the anger. While she affirms my right to be angry and confirms that anger is good, she also makes me feel like I should move past that already in order to adopt a more mature, Christian attitude. While this is not the text for that subject, I'd really like someone to tell me how to practically do just that. Ok, so she does give 13 concrete steps for how to deal with it in the last two pages, but I guess I'm just impatient to be in a different place already.
