Ok..so I feel the need to change my review of this a bit having read this book for the second time, as my view changed..a tiny bit, as did my rating. I love to find books that I can enjoy time and time again. Books that I know after I have picked it up, I will want to read, finish, and then two or three years down the road pick up again, in the hopes that either I will still love it, or change my opinion about it based on where I am in life. With this book, I can admit, I changed my view about of how I felt about it. Upon the first reading, I gave this book 4 stars. It was the book that somehow enticed me to want to read more books like this..a genre I can only describe as F'd up drug enduced pasts that spill out via a memior. I went searching for more like it after the first reading this book. I think in some way reading that someone else has been through hell, remdinds me my life isn't that bad. However, here it is, roughtly 6 years after the first initial read of the book. And my thoughts on it have changed. I now would give it closer to a 3 (maybe 3.5?) in rating. Keep in mind in the time that has elapsed the Oprah controversy occured, and the author himself admitted that this book was written based on the "reality" he remembered but that it might not be entirely true. However, that is not what made me change my mind a bit on this review. I remember really loving the stream of consciousness type writing of Frey on the first read. That still rings true on the second read. However, what I realized it lacked this time around, was more detail, more true "grit and grime" of his life. He eludes to situations, things that occured during his downfall when he takes inventory of his life..but it almost comes way too late in the book capture a reader into realizing how truly F'd up he was. Part of me wanted to feel more, "taste" more of his anger, his FURY he constantly references...but we only get glimpses of that. I almost wanted more details of his drug use, so I really could understand how low he had hit. There are great references to constantly looking in his eyes...being afraid to see who he really IS and was, but part of me wanted to know more of his downfall so I could see why he was ashamed to view who he really was in treatment. Character wise, I loved the interaction with others in the Clinic. I almost think this is where Frey shines on giving the reader more of a view into who he is. Interactions with Leonard and Joanne, and even Lily show more glimers of who he became as he got sober, and what he valued as important in others. I guess I just felt a lack of those characters to show how truly low he was prior to coming to the Clinic. All in all, a good read on the second time around. I still enjoyed the writing style, and the book still left me disgusted and angry someone would go through so much in such a short amount of time. I still rooted for him during the times he struggled to maintain staying at the clinic, and am, glad in the long run he is still around to author other books. However, as I finished the second read of this book..I realized I can't really see myself picking it up and re-reading it again. Twice is enough. I do look forward to checking out some of his other books in the future.
