I saw the book in the bookstore...and of course I had to read the jacket cover, and now am counting down the days until I get it and bring it to its new home :) I'm such a bookjacket whore, I get sucked in by a well written synopsis. Imagine my delight when the little teaser lives up to its name. I'm hoping this will be one of those times. Currently loving this book. The characters, the story...I've become invested in the ending, and am really hoping it doesn't disappoint. I started reading this last night, and I'm 3/4 of the way through it... Okay. done, and I'm not left feeling disappointed, so really keyed up about that. In the first couple pages, I had a tough time getting into the authors stride, but I got it in short order, and loved the book. The plot about ex girlfriend getting vengeance on the guy who leaves to make it big in the rock scene..it was pretty good. I really loved the characters, and how the author humanized them in a way that was at once recognizable and painful...

Nice job on having a creepy YA novel that's not about an apocalypse or dystopia and/or zombies, Blake! Much appreciated. First off: awesome cover. Absolutely lovely, and fits the tone of the book perfectly. Secondly: Kendare Blake is a girl. Given that the protagonist is a teenage boy and "Kendare" is not a common enough name to know it's usual gender, it's not surprising I thought the author was a guy when I picked it up. It doesn't make a difference to the actual story, but it's always surprising to me when I get an author's gender wrong. So just throwing that out there. Thirdly: Blake is good with the creepy. A petite girl in a white dress covered in blood is just kind of inherently spooky (see also: little twin girls) so Anna Dressed in Blood had it kind of built-in. But all the scenes with the ghosts were eerie, and I really liked the opening scene where Cas has to deal with the all-too-common urban legend of a ghostly hitchhiker. There is also a surprisingly high body count and lots of GORE. Which is kind of what you need in a supernatural horror book. Fourthly: The ghost mythology was good, with enough explanations that I could accept the world and enough questions that it's able to be filled in later. It's not like the supernatural world comes with a manual (THOUGH IT SHOULD), so it's not surprising that Cas only knows what experience and others can tell him. Fifthly: I liked Cas. He's a highly trained loner who doesn't get any real friends until this book. I kind of love teenage professionals. I also liked his ability to go toe-to-toe with ghosts is partly through his magical knife, which is what makes him faster/stronger/better. The kid is obviously talented in and of himself, but it's more realistic in a sense that it's not just that he somehow has mad martial arts skills, but that there is actual magic that heightens his senses/reactions and make him a better ghost hunter. Now, why the book is four stars instead of five: the romance. Or, really, lack thereof. Cas is pretty much hopelessly in love with Anna. And when she's not ripping people apart (literally), I can understand why: she's pretty and tragic and vulnerable yet powerful. And Anna is in love with Cas because, yeah, he is cute and he saved her (after)life. But it's a lot of tell-don't-show going on; it's pretty much love at first sight and that will never, ever feel epic or romantic to me. It makes the relationship feel hollow and shallow and when Cas spends so much time mooning over Anna I want more there. I pretty much liked everything BUT the romance. Since the next book is centered on saving Anna (again, some more), I hope more is done to give depth to the love between Anna and Cas. I want to root for these two crazy kids, I just need more to go on. This is one of those books that I hope starts a trend. Down with apocalypse/dystopia! Down with zombies! Up with horror! Up with ghosts!

What do we learn about China's revolutionary history? From this book we learn is was looooooong, produced little benefits and great pains, and essentially created the culture that is China today. After the first fifteen disappointments, it was hard to see any way out - I can't decide if that's my opinion about the book or China's painful history.

This was a compelling read. Interesting character study of prejudice in trying times. It takes place during WWII in a town where a Japanese internment camp was set up by the US gov't. The characters are written in a way that allows the reader to care about them and get involved in their lives. Written from the viewpoint of a young girl in the town who lives on a farm next to the camp.

Such a good summer read! I especially love the Nantucket setting as I love most books set in New England. The characters were well developed and there were some surprising twists I did not see coming.

A Delightful Reading Experience! The Widow’s Walk League by Nancy Lynn Jarvis is the fourth book in the Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries. If the other three are as delightful as this one, I would highly recommend them. Regan McHenry is a real estate agent who has the habit of getting involved in murder investigations to the consternation of her policeman friend, Dave Everett. In this story, bodies of husbands are popping up everywhere, and it appears there is a scheme afoot to create four more widows to invest in a commune-style housing arrangement. When the new widows begin placing their homes with Regan and her husband Tom’s real estate firm, Regan’s need to “right wrongs” that aren’t any of her concern draws her farther and farther into the intrigue until she is unsure who the guilty party is, which could ultimately make her a target. Jarvis handles this story with the expertise of a seasoned writer. The story flows easily, and her unfolding of information and clues is superb, keeping you guessing until the end. Her characters come alive through description, dialogue, and their relationships with each other. I read the book in one afternoon because it literally drew me forward page after page. I couldn't find a copy at Walmart, but I found one at Hastings. How I love Hastings. Anyways, I was reading this book and I can't decide who I want Yuki to choose, usually I know right off the bat who I want to win. I like Kaname because he saved her and is willing to wait for her, but I don't want him to be choosen just because he saved her. As for Zero, love the name, I like him because he really protects her and he worrys about her instead of himself. Which is bad since he's so close to becoming a level E vampire. I don't like him because he's so close to death, and he might drag her down with him. And why should he be drinking Yuki's blood, I thought he was against vampires doing that. I know it's only to stay alive, but really, he's going to end up sucking her dry. I want to know who wins, so I'll keep buying this series.

I really liked this book. I liked the symbolism and the balance between making the boys just little boys and then also making them adults. Using children allowed the author to get to raw human emotion quickly, and it didn't seem like that much of a jump from being civilized boys to being scared savages. The book was very similar to "Lost," and if you liked this book, I highly suggest watching "Lost."

Voltaire wouldn't still be read so frequently if he wasn't so brilliant, and so I can by no means criticize the rapacious wit, cutting honesty, and insightful observations of such a master. My favorite of the philosophes, but I would not attempt to tackle this work with no footnotes or additional information. There are many cultural references so obsolete that even an intelligent reader may have difficulty discerning the humor, and following the historical references without strong background knowledge would be frustrating to say the least. Worth the effort, however.

I hesitated to start this book for the longest time because it seemed dense and had a lengthy page count. The first few chapters of the book made me nervous; they were filled with financial/legal jargon and weren't always the easiest to follow, but after about 60-70 pages of reading, the story got very interesting very quickly. From then on, I couldn't put the book down easily. Excited to pick up the second in this series.
