Ok first off - this is not a Stephen King book - yes there is a large amount of text in there written by King but it is far from being his work. That is done by f-Stop, the photographer. There are some truly amazing pictures which to me at least remind me that there is so much going on i ignore or just walk on by without ever taking in. And all this amazing imagery from a country centuries younger than mine- for fear of stepping in something i wish i had not - its a reminder to look up and around me every day.

I love Paley's story-telling--the way that she treats heartbreak and tragedy as though it were an everyday occurance, which, I guess it is. Her characters don't complain about their depressing lives, they accept them as their lots in life. Paley gets extra points for her dialogue, which captures a culture and can be hilarious. Unfortunately, this collection also feels as though, if you've read one story, you've read them all, which is why I'm only giving it three stars.

From what I read of this, it seemed like an entertaining take on the vampire theme. But, I am kind of tired of vampires, even though it seems like I haven't read that many books featuring them. Maybe it's all the book reviews and hype. Maybe it's all those Sookie Stackhouse books I listened to.
Borrowed from church library. One woman's journey to Godliness. Excellent! Written in journal format of her struggles to grow spiritually and daily life of mother, wife, sister, daughter.

Hmmm... I have mixed feelings about this book. Not one of my favorites, though I enjoyed the history of the quilt patterns discussed throughout. The main character is nearly unlikeable and only slightly believeable as a Civil War era bride.
The first two-thirds of this book was great. Lowry was really telling a story. But then, at the end, she drops the story completely and ends the story as a parable. It was very disappointing and didn't work for me. I wanted the end of the STORY, not an expiation analogy that waves a magic wand over the dystopia and makes everything all better. Oh well.
I read this years ago. Should read it again.

Really good short stories. This author is very good and she's great and description. She writes well of things she's familiar with like the East Coast, Calcutta, India, and the like. I could easily pictures some of these as movies.
Wow! THIS ONE IS WEIRD! it is ghastly and amputated body parts getting hacked off such a bloody play! but great and sometimes funny in really sick ways and interesting about rape and masculinity and patriarchy blah blah. you know. also about body fluids and maybe Self. like coming apart and dying even though you have 25 kids. and also my favorite i think about weeping and grieving and crying and being afraid it will end you. being afraid that youll cry out all your moisture and shrivel up. having to forget bad things and put them in their place. how you saw other people deal with bad things and then trying to deal with it in the same way. and also, the film Titus with anthony hopkins. so so good. (after reading the play, better to have an idea of whats going on before so you dont have to watch and translate, you know?)
