A more hands-on approach than some of the Dalai Lama's writing to dealing with the maya, or illusions that keep us unhappy, and the way we work ourselves up about things we can't control.

Loved the book but was disappointed by the movie.
Amaing read! I would have NEVER picked this up and read it if my dear friend would not have recommended it to me. I am so glad I did. Ready for the movie!

an easy and wonderful way to see the stars.
The murder part was rather ludicrous, but the mystery itself was fun. Did Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian return to England and entrust William Wordsworth with his story? I liked the investigating English prof and her 13-year-old black protege from the projects Tenille, though I wish Tenille had gotten to speak for herself more in a more distinctive voice.

A poor man's Tom Clancy novel, this book is a great read. Quick and easy, if that's what you're looking for, while at the same time sucking you into a well thought out and intricate plot line that kept me reading when I wanted to turn out the light and go to sleep. That's how I know it's good. If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would, but it's just not quite worth 4 — though it's really close.
Is this still being taught in our schools? (Aside from Texas, that is - it doesn't contain enough references to Hayek, the free enterprise system, and Phyllis Schlafly to be taught in Texas.) I read this when I was junior high age, but I think I read it on my own. I retained literally nothing of it, which I see now is due partly to my teeny unformed brain and partly to the book's general vagueness. There are several pivotal events, but much of the book is filled with boring sports episodes and conversations where you're not entirely sure what's being discussed. You're also trying to figure out whether Gene, the narrator, is trustworthy; his narrative unfolds on shifting sands. I can see why many students wouldn't enjoy it. That said, there are some beautifully written passages. I liked this: Like all old, good schools, Devon did not stand isolated behind walls and gates but emerged naturally from the town which had produced it. So there was no sudden moment of encounter as I approached it; the houses along Gilman Street began to look more defensive, which meant that I was near the school, and then more exhausted, which meant that I was in it. And this, which perfectly captures the ennui inherent in most in dorm room decor: Our room had by this time of year the exhausted look of a place where two people had lived too long without taking any interest in their surroundings.

Dense and complex, yet majestic in its scope, "Bleak House" is indeed an awesome novel, though I must confess, "Great Expectations" is my favorite book, hands down. :) Filled with a colorful kaleidoscope of characters who are all inextricably linked to one another - in some form or fashion - in which they all center around two major events that factor as the crux of the novel: the near unsolvable case of inheritance in Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce; and the unfolding parentage mystery of Esther Summerson. The novel may be a feat (even out of reach) for some, what, as it clocks in at 900 plus pages; but those who have a immense love of great literature will be amply rewarded in reading this much heralded Dickens novel. Highly recommended
