This is a very small and pleasant homage to NYC. Many moments with an aftertaste of Invisible Cities: "Talking about New York is a way of talking about the world"

We loved this book because it was a true story. This book helped us write stories about times we lost things we loved.

One of my best friends in high school and I would trade each other books all of the time, usually just light sci-fi stuff. Then one day his mom handed me Handmaid's Tale, and it blew me away. Set in a not-so-distant future where religious fundamentalism rules the country and women are only valued for their ability to breed, this book is an amazing postcard from the transition period from normal to what everyone is afraid of. It's awesome in the true sense of the word.

So this is the first in a sci-fi trilogy written 20 years ago. Once again, like -Survivor- this story comes with a very interesting alien race, though this one is much more alien being plant based as far as I can tell and having 3 genders. And so again I was reminded of Card's -Speaker for the Dead-. The story holds up to time well, probably because as with other Butler sci-fi novels, advanced technology is (mysteriously?) absent. Also similar to her other novels the environment is harsh and the lead character is a female that suffers throughout. At this point I wouldn't say I'm getting bored of her writing but I would like to read something "different" from her. I've got 5 more novels of hers to read but 2 of them are the continuation of this series so I guess I'll find out over the next couple months.

I'm glad I read this when the hype wore down because it is a thoroughly compelling memoir. I couldn't put it down... and I ate strawberries & chocolate eclairs (have the stains to prove it) as if I was reading a lame chicklit; although I felt that my behavior was warranted in this case. I did suppose while reading that this wouldn't appeal to many male readers and/or people who don't really care to hear about other parts of the world that much. Especially if you can't stand the "flowery" prose - however I immediately liked her. She's a fan of Nabokov - can you blame her? ...As far as some reviews I read that accuse the book of reflecting too positively on Western civilization by comparison, I disagree. Just as she continuously taught her students, you must remove all preconceived notions before forming opinions. As far as I'm concerned, arresting yourself to these instinctual feelings is essentially missing the bigger picture (it's a bit ironic, actually). This is an entirely different perspective. And regardless, if it appeals to a certain audience or not, this book undeniably puts things into perspective whereever you are. She ridiculed the long-haired, idle hippies from her days in America just as much as she did with the obstinate activists in Tehran.

I found it a little heartbreaking to read some of the other reviews of this book. So many people are ready to respond in a black and white manner to such a complex issue. The social worker in me appreciates the first hand account of mixed emotions the author presents regarding his son's addiction. The parent in me may lock up my teenager until he is around thirty years old.
