great historical fiction novel, keeps your attention, very well-written
i love this book,
Very well written. Realistic. No fluffy, miraculous ending for this one, but definitely a positive closure, although I want to find out what happens next!
I guess I'd really give this 3.5 stars. It was fine, but it tainted the film version for me, which is what I grew up with. There were some fun things about the book, but I completely prefer the movie.
This novel is about the Igbo culture in Nigeria and how European culture comes to destroy their seeds and their customs. The intrusion of the white man in Nigeria and how they tried to impose their ‘leprosy’, their beliefs and systems of government in Nigeria. Like leprosy, they were spreading throughout Africa, taking the culture away from Nigerians and dissolving it into Christianity or other European forms of mission. Therefore, the white man was seen as horrible men, who wanted to take away the culture and destroy it. Okonkwo, one of the main characters in the book and the one with who the book is introduced, is best exemplified in his vulnerability towards an effeminate and weak attitude. One has to take into consideration that Okonkwo was a man who despised his father, and wanted to present himself as a man strong enough and rather masculine. For this reason, Ikemefuna (ironically not one of his sons) came to be one of the most important persons in Okonkwo’s life both as an individual capable of demonstrating an invincible strength and masculine ‘attire’, but also as a son. Okonkowe admired Ikemefuna’s ability to bring in that masculine and strong aspect to the family, for he would teach important things to Nwoye, things which Okonkwo considered to give men a great potential and spiritual strength. After Okonkwo decided to plot against his own adoptive son, Ikemefuna, Okonkwo fell under great consternation, sadness and incredible guilt.

COTN really tunnels deep into the dark places of human nature. 15YO Bobby is a first-class Dublin hooligan--mean, unrepentant, selfish & hard to like. Hoping he'll reform, his mother, who's hardly better, takes him and his little brother Dennis to a quaint cottage in a quiet Irish village away from her creditors and the temptations of mean city streets. Bobby slowly uncovers the murderous history of the house they rent and confronts his own demons which, trust me, come to seem pretty average compared with the dark things he discovers in and about this house and its former inhabitants. I could have done with a bit less of Bobby's delinquency which becomes a little boring, but the last 40 pages of this gripping book and what it has to say about evil in human nature will resonate with me for a long while.

There is a certain time in life - somewhere in early adulthood - when this book is a must read. You really get excited as you read it, there's a feeling you're being handed the keys to the Universe and its secrets. You feel exhilarated when it's finished and you wish the book would go on and on...
I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. Possibly never. I laughed out loud repeatedly, and I am more the kind of girl who usually thinks "that's funny" instead of laughing (sad but true). Read it!
