This book is incredible! John Yudkin presents an amazing case against the consumption of sugar and demonstrates quite convincingly that sugar, not fat and cholesterol, is at the root of the heart disease, obesity, and type II diabetes epidemic we are currently facing. Good luck getting a hold of this book. It was very difficult to find.

Not bad, but not great. Got confusing at times. Often wanted to slap Eden for being such a whiny baby. There were times when I was totally enthralled and times when I was bored out of my mind. I wish that Clifford would have gone into the characterization a little more, I feel like there are a gazillion characters and only a few are actually developed. I was a quick, ok read. Not on my favorites, but I'll read the next one.

Illich presents a very unique argument in Energy and Equity; basically, he contends that not only is energy unevenly distributed throughout the world and between the social classes, but that the availability of abundant and cheap energy in any given society necessarily leads to increases in social inequality. Although he offers no realistic solutions to this dilemma, his understanding of affluence and the ability to travel at high velocities is one aspect of his line-of-reasoning that I will never forget.

The librarian at my daughter's school has been reading this one to her classes, and recommended it to me. It had a lot of fairly challenging concepts for the littles, and I don't know that they got as much out of it as the adults.

Great overview of different forms and styles of Islamic education throughout the world from Britain to Indonesia. It takes apart the idea of what is a madrasa especially following the 9/11 attacks and war in Afghanistan. It shows very clearly that madrasas are not places of terrorism/violence but actually a system of education that has been around for centuries and is struggling to come to terms with modernity.

This is a story well told from an upper-middle class perspective, but I really had to keep reminding myself of that because the author gets a little annoying and self-righteous as she tells of some of her experiences. This book should be read by other people who have never had to depend on minimum-wage work for a living or don't know anyone who has. Although it isn't on my "best" list, I'm glad I read it.
