this book literally changed the course of my life, because of it's influence on the first perfromance i collaborated on- the genesis project. it is a beautiful story that focusses on biblical women and their perspective- something the good book never goes into much depth with. it is a book that celebrates womanhood, but i think men would appreciate the insight as well.

beautifully written.
At first glance, this book about a retiring English butler seems as if it is the last thing one might want to read, but it is one of the best novels I have ever read. Ishiguro makes you believe in the power of fine storytelling. The subtleness with which he lays out the this multi-layered story makes you feel as if you are apart of the story itself - truly the purpose of a great writer, I think.

Not as good as the first book, but still great. Every time I read the series, this book feels like its sole purpose is to provide the exposition needed prior to the intense and important third book. Sadly, heavy exposition weakens any story. Also, this book suffers from pacing problems. There are long stretches between events, during which the plot sags like a telephone wire between the poles. Still, the book is still fun. It retains most of the innocence of the first book, while injecting hints of the darkness that will begin in earnest with the third book. Since each book in the series gets darker, this is the last time we really see the main characters as true children. Props to the audiobook reader: Jim Dale. Awesome!
A beautiful book about Odella, an older teen girl who is dealing with issues surrounding her alcoholic mother who left them a couple of years ago. It's also about family and how all of the people who were a part of her mother's past come together in Odella's present to give her a better picture of what her mother's life and pain was like, while also forming a support system for Odella.
A good book, it begs the question, did I give up my soul to live in the suburbs? For myself, I think not, but it points out some interesting things. How much of yourself do you change or give up to fit into someone else's ideal?
