Let's pretend your life revolves around music. Shouldn't be too hard. It's your religion, your ultimate seduction aid and occasional money provider. A good, no, GREAT, weekend involves flipping through stacks and stacks of records in someone's garage with your wife at your side. She drives you home, taking hairpin turns and fights with you over who gets to be Oates when She's Gone comes on the radio. There's years of this, there's fights, there's making up but mostly there's music. And of course, love. Love and music. What happens when something happens, something irreversible and that part of your life is gone? Love is a Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield is a memoir about just that: love, music and the five years he spent with his first wife, writer Renée Crist. I have to backtrack a bit here for the inevitable personal interjection. Back in the day, I bought a book called The Spin Alternative Record Guide... Is it just me or do the characters in this book piss you off? Maybe it's a compliment to the author but I disliked the characters and their actions so much I felt kind of miserable after I read this book.

** spoiler alert ** I adored this book. First, I re-read it from the memory of high school days. Then, that was not enough and I bought it on a download, so that like all of Jane Austen that I own, I could listen to it whenever I wanted to. This story of Isabelle Archer, the pride of American beauty and intellect, who goes to Europe under the guidance of her aunt to "further her prospects" seems such a sad one to me. That she should turn down two very eligible offers and then be drawn to a man of insane cruelty makes this book a true tragedy. I cannot get enough of its complexities and truths.
Book was fun and series has potential. Light fantasy.

What a sweet sensitive book. This is my first by Murakami, but it won't be my last. Highly recommended.

When I saw that Lansdale had dedicated this book to one of my favorite authors, Andrew Vachss, I knew it was going to be a good one. This is another book in the fascinating Hap and Leonard series, where the two friends stumble into a series of misadventures. In this case, Leonard's heartsickness leads him to breakup a biker bar with a baseball bat and shotgun, and in the aftermath the boys find themselves on the up to their eyeballs in black market smut and oil which the bikers were scheming. The key to the Hap and Leonard series is the vulgar humor and it is on display here, with the boys busting each others and the crooks chops with every opportunity. There characters and their frank dialogue make this a very memorable story.
Very good.

I'll be the first to say I have a thing for a tattooed sexy mobster, throw in a hot cop and some awesome smexin, and I'm there. This story had very hot moments, very sweet moments, and I liked the ending a lot...But at times it felt a bit repetitive. This is Alexei's and Patrick's story. Alexei is member of the Russian Mafia in Chicago working as an informant for the CPD, his contact in the department is Patrick. These two men have a serious attraction, they can't keep their hands off each other, but the circumstances around them are not exactly favorable. From the get go it's obvious this was going to be a complicated romance given the premise, but something just felt like it was missing throughout it for me. I really liked both Patrick and Alexei a lot, but I wanted a little more from their connection. Sometimes the moments they shared were lovely and moving, and other times they just fell flat . All in all, I'd say its an easy read, VERY sexy, and in the end a nice love story. It just went a little long for me.

I don't usually like short stories but I think Lahiri's are beyond good.

High points of this book: engaging. For most this is going to be a book that will completely absorb them on the beach, in transportation, after work, and all that... easy to lose yourself in, that's what I mean. I really loved the zoological elements but found the ending a little too "AND NOW WE HAVE A HUGE TWIST... WHICH IS THE TRUTH?!!" for me. I think people can do that literary work without that much help, but it is fun, at least.
