My very favorite Ayn Rand book. This one's been read twice and I've picked it up and re-read a few key parts a few times. This one's got power.
I often wonder how I'll react when someone very close to me dies. Joan Didion's story of her sometimes crazy thoughts and actions in the year after her husband passed away is a fascinating, unpandering exploration of profound grief.

sacco is so good. if you're not into his art, sorry. i dig his writing and creativiy. the cd of the miracle workers wasn't bad either. sacco is hilarious at times, and very real with his observations. sacco also did the artwork for fat possum label, which in my opinion is the best blues label.

An enjoyable book which I found quite silly and flat in parts, but which kept me engaged and interested. The characters are flat, the dialogue is wooden and the plot is implausible, but nevertheless it kept me hooked. I can't help wondering why such an average book generates so much admiration. In terms of great and insightful literature, it ranks with the Da Vinci code. The author certainly lacks the skill and insight to portray children, even genius children, accurately. The characters were not childlike in any way except for constantly saying 'but I'm just a kid!' ( something that actual children would rarely say). There was some fleeting reference to why almost only boys are sent to battle school, but it made no sense. The subplot with Ender's siblings was silly, dull and irrelevant. The battle school seemed to include no military instruction whatsoever. The battle scenes were certainly the most fun and interesting parts of the book, and I believe the author's inspiration for the book began with the ideas for those. That was where Card's talent and imagination really shone. I might go on to the next book, but only if it includes more of the battle scenes.

I also think this should be required reading... damn, i should be a high school sociology teacher.
Hilarious wordplay book. Especially good for a read-aloud.

a startling book. You'd think a child killer would be a monster. But, this book turns it around. It gives us the perspective of a girl who, when she was 10, killed her best friend. Now, she's served her time and is back out trying to live life again. She struggles with what society also struggles with: Does she deserve a life after she took one? Can a girl who kills at 10 change when she gets older, or is she just a monster? Before this book, I would have thought I was VERY comfortable with the answer to that one. Now, well....
Another good read...though there were a few aspects I wish he would have covered in more detail.

I remember reading this book many many many years ago. Mostly I remembered that I enjoyed it, but I didn't remember why. That was before the time of personal book reviews that can be stored on line -- or at least before I started to write them. Since I couldn't remember much about it, I figured I would read it again. And this time around I had very mixed feelings about this story. I still am not sure why I liked the book! There seemed like there wasn't much about the storyline -- each year 100 boys are involved in an event where basically they walk until they can't walk any more. If they stop walking, they are shot dead. The last one walking is the winner. Simple as that. Considering the simple idea of the story line, its surprising to me how enthralled I was in the novel. I couldn't put it down. It was disturbing, and it seems like nothing horribly exciting happened. One would think that all the shooting would keep things exciting, but honestly after a while, you become like the boys in the book -- you become a bit immune to it. I just couldn't stop reading. Its almost like I was on the walk with them -- by the end I was just in a trance and needed to keep going until I was finished. But in a good way. It is very interesting to me how King was able to take a simple idea and some how turn it into such an entertaining, disturbing, and intriguing novel. He made it impossible not to mentally place yourself in the book, on the walk with the boys. That is probably what made this such a good book in my opinion.
