Thanks to Goodreads book giveaways, I received a copy of this self-published novel. I just read it today, so my review will be short with just a few first impressions. I will come back later to review it in full. The novel starts out with a prologue of Wendy 11 years ago, when her mother tried to kill her and her brother saved her life. Since then, Wendy has been expelled from a few schools, hasn't really had friends, and has been spoiled by her aunt and brother, who are now taking care of her. Then Finn shows up and tells her the truth: Wendy is Trylle, otherwise known as a troll. But not in the conventional sense; more on this later. One thing leads to the next and suddenly Wendy is thrown into a life she knows nothing about. All right, now starts my first impressions of the book. While I liked the book, I wouldn't go hunting specifically for it. This is for a few reasons. For starters, the editing of the book wasn't high quality. There were times I had to reread a sentence a few times in order to understand what it was saying, which stops the fluidity of the language. There is a major contradicting point in the novel as well. (view spoiler) While I liked Finn, his relationship with Wendy did not have depth. Readers could see that he had a clear sense of duty, but his feelings are stated, rather than shown. Even worse is Wendy, whose feelings stem mostly from him being attractive; go figure. Wendy in general was rather vexing; she did not have manual labor, was spoiled, and when a certain major event happened, she didn't even do anything about it, acting more like a damsel in distress than she was in the beginning. This being said, I liked how Elora, Rhys, Matt, Maggie, Tove, and Willa were portrayed. I got a good sense of their characters, and this helped me to connect with each individually instead of just referring to them as "the side characters". Tove and Willa especially appealed to me, even with Willa's obvious class issue. I have hope for her. However, there are two major problems with this book; the lack of Wendy needing to know information, and the lack of actual events. Wendy adamantly tells the readers that she wants to know about her knew life, but I found myself frustrated that she didn't ask sooner. If it was me, I immediately would have asked about certain things (view spoiler). Though Wendy eventually either asks or is told, I couldn't sympathize with her shock at these truths. As mentioned previously, nothing actually happens in the book. There are about 5 major things that happen, and those include a prologue, the introduction of Finn, a small fight, the introduction of Wendy's new life, and an actual major event at the end. The rest is Wendy walking around sulking or trying to please Elora. I know I sound harsh, but there are reasons I rated this book a 3 out of 5. Though I say the faults, I enjoyed reading the book, and there are a few moments that held the book up for me. I know I said this before, but I really loved Tove and Willa, and, though the relationship between Wendy and Finn seemed forced and a little ridiculous, I liked Finn's character as well; his moral values and sense of duty stayed true to the end. **EDITS** Alright, so I've rested a bit from the book. Going back, I agree with everything I said before. However, I've painted the picture that this is a terrible book, which is simply not true. As the 3/5 stars indicate, I liked it. Wendy is a generally likable character, albeit a bit frustrating at times, but likable. She doesn't complain and cry and pass out at the sight of a hot guy. I especially liked when she stood up for herself when a certain someone was being mean to her at a dance. Though stunned and close to tears, the reaction was understandable and believable; hell, I probably would have said something stupid then run into the bathroom to cry. I said this before, but I'll say it again; Tove and Willa were excellent. Tove's unique personality and calm power left me breathless and (personally) swooning, and Willa's realism and flawed view on humans contented my logical side. A lot of times authors have side characters that are great, but all are perfect , so perfect that I want to smack them and call them fake. The general plot was intriguing, the writing fine with just a few editorial errors, and the descriptions were just enough for me to get a sense of what things looked like, but not enough to leave no room for interpretation. All in all: 3.25/5 Plot: 2.5/5 (lower because nothing really seemed to happen) Characters: 4/5 Realism (or how believable): 4/5 Writing: 2.5/5 (clear errors that could be fixed by proofreading and some sentences that were awkward) Will I reread the book?: Yes WIll I recommend it?: Not enthusiastically, but still yes Will I look for more in the series?: Definitely
