Excellent read! I was happy to have finished it, after seeing every rendition on film, I had fears of not being able to endure the actual book. But it was a rather nice surprise. I love the writing style.
Nicely done first mystery, set in the days after the Spanish Civil War ended when tensions between Franco supporters and the vanquished Republicans were high enough for people to shoot first and ask questions later. Carlos Tejada, a member of the feared Guardia Civil must solve the murder of a friend. He gets a lot wrong but the pleasure of the novel turns on the moments when he gets it right.

I got this book from a teacher when I left Banning for Beaumong after the 7th grade. Yes I was a dork, but that's another issue. I spent the entire summer reading both volumes, and it's something that I've always kept with me, or at least known where it was when my mom was holding part of my library for a few years. Now it's a weathered, beat up book that I like turning too every once in a while -- not so much for the stories anymore, but just to remember how I was way back when.

I wept when I was done. RIP Douglas Adams.
What do a sandbar, a cottage, a mansion, and a talking West Highland White Terrier have in common? You'll have to read to find out, clever and witty I laughed out loud.

This sent genuine chills down my spine when reading at night. I'm still musing over the ending; it is shockingly clear and the story masterfully builds up to it. I tend to dislike this kind of endings, but in this case it fits inevitably. Not at all in the narrative style I expected, it was a pleasant surprise.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I sort of assumed it would be pretty dry and boring, but apparently I'd never heard of the BBC TV series, because the whole book is like a celebrity gossip mag for the Roman Empire. Once I got over the fact that it was incredibly hard to keep names straight, and remember who was related to who (a family tree might help, although it would be the most compl, I let myself get caught up in all the sordid fictionalized scandal. Robert Graves turns Claudius into a smart, bookish, cripple, who's only desire is to write history the way he sees it as he tries not to be killed off by all his power hungry relatives. Who knows how accurate this version of him really is, but it makes for likeable, although somewhat cowardly, narrator. The story did get repetitive after a while, since it was a lot of killing people by framing them of treason, but it was still much less dry than I had expected. A fun way to read about history, while obviously keeping in mind that it is totally fictionalized.
This is a collection of this guy’s writings about medical cases. They were mainly written in the 70s and 80s, it seems, and his old-fashioned chauvinism shines through. There also seem to be quite a few factual errors. I definitely wouldn’t call it a good book; the cases aren’t even all that interesting and he doesn’t say anything to make them more so.
Copy #171 of 300 found in Seattle bookshop in Pioneer Square -- what a surprise! Poetry by an old friend back in the day, and artwork by my best friend ex-husband. What I learned? Haiku rules!
The great thing about Brandon Sanderson is that when he does worldbuilding it's not just unnecessary wanking. Except when he's finishing up Wheel of Time. He builds worlds that are interesting, logical (eventually), and fit together with the plot. I could have used a little more brutality. GRRM has spoiled me. I'd take Sanderson's violence much more seriously if he offed a major character or two. I think my biggest criticism of this book is its size. I was tempted to buy a Kindle just so I wouldn't have to carry this book around. The other thing of note is that the book read like a video game in places. I blame the Shard gear. Dudes with running around with hundreds of pounds of armor, killing several lesser men in a single blow, while fighting over big loot drops? Yeah it's hard not to picture combat in MMO terms. Anyway, I think this observation is noteworthy because I viewed Mistborn as anime. I'm curious how I'll picture his other works.
