Oh, the corruption, the corruption! In The Picture of Dorian Gray. Lord Henry Wotton corrupts a sweet and unfortunately beautiful Dorian with his beliefs about life, women, politics, education. We all enjoy doing this to those who are innocent and young. Wotton speaks twisted truth but we are in denial. And Dorian takes the fall for it. Both The Happy Prince and The Birthday of the Infanta were sad but sweet. I have yet to read Lord Arthur Savile's Crime.

I had never read any of the books in this series by Lawrence Block but I enjoyed learning about the police detective, Matthew Scudder, very much. Aside from the murder that Scudder is investigating, what the book outlines is the life of a man in his first year of sobriety and how AA works. In this way, it reminded me of Infinite Jest, the parts that deal with addiction and the reasons to stay sober and engaged. Even though this is the seventeenth book in the series I didn't feel that I had missed anything. I also enjoyed Mr. Block's descriptions of New York City in the early-mid 1980s. This was a very enjoyable read. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to get back to it. It had silly and witty dialogue that was intriguing to me. I can never think of comebacks the way the heroine could. The ending was well done, although not what I wanted to happen. A Mormon housewife in all her glory among the kids, wash, dinners and messes being pursued by a big hunk actor? This book made it seem possible.

Dark and gritty story that takes place primarily in a murderous forest after a war between human and faerie folk. The imagination and detail of the story are amazing. High fantasy - very otherworldly. The character's that set out on the journey together are unique. We're in the main character's head through narrative for a large part of it but the story was interesting and suspenseful enough to pull me through easily.

I found this to be an entertaining read and thought some parts really well crafted, but was, overall, disappointed. Feels very 90's - identity politics, campus scandals, etc.
