She really captures the idiom of Jane Austen quite well. I really appreciated the fact that it was written that way rather than supposedly updated for a modern readership. I think it had quite a bit of sex in it which may offend Jane Austen purists, but it does attempt to rework certain so-called truisms about white masculinity namely through Darcy's penis. This was an interesting narrative and definitely very intriguing if not a little disappointing in some areas (due to its approximation of actual English gentry life). She does rectify some of this in the subsequent book Darcy and Elizabeth: Nights and Days at Pemberly but I found that end a little unsatisfying as well. I would certainly recommend it for the new characters as much for the exploration of old favorites.
A bit different than his other works with POV and voice, but it is extremely effective and gripping. A disturbing and thoughtful story - part third person, part from the eyes of a killer.
During a tour of Boston's Chinatown a severed hand is found which leads to the discovery of a body of a mystery woman. An old murder-suicide case is re-opened after possible links are established leading Jane and her team on a difficult trail of discovery involving old Chinese folk tales and myths and a mysterious being that carries out acts of justice with an ancient sword. Although I enjoyed the story and the tales of old Chinese folklore, the mystery itself didn't really tie together, a lot was left unanswered which left me unsatisfied and even Jane and her team didn't seem to have as much of a place in this story whilst Maura's dilemma with giving evidence against a police officer seemed to have a place at the beginning that soon petered out into nothing. Certainly not as pacy and nailbiting as her other thrillers.

Her comics have always cracked me up, and while this novel isn't exactly FUNNY, it's certainly interesting and different than anything else I've ever read. Her other novel, The Good Times Are Killing Me, will crack yo ass up.

A very good read. Through the story of two characters, Harold and Erica, the author uses their lives to elucidate the latest finds in social neuroscience. The book is very insightful and at times beautiful and moving. I highly recommend it.
This story takes place in France and so, many phrases and conversations in the story take place in French (there are translations in the back of this version). I have enjoyed reading this, though the main character is quite restrained most of the time. My love of Catherine and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights might explain my dislike of the plain and cold-seeming Lucy Snowe.

I was really digging this book during the first 30 pages or so, and then I just felt like it was a little blah. The last 6 pages redeemed it a little for me. I enjoyed the book, but I didn't really think it was great. If I'm going to read a book about a guys journey to find the ANSWER, I think I'd rather read Siddhartha (I know they aren't the same, but...) One thing I'll give this book: it is nice and short. I love an author who can get it done succinctly.

Miri and the other girls in her village are forced to join an academy, from which the prince will choose his bride. Though certainly written to a child's level, this book is unique and surprising at every turn. Definitely worthy of the Newbery Honor it was awarded. (Review written 12/30/2007.)

It’s a novel about Amanda Feral, who is a freshly made zombie and is discovering that there is a different world out there, besides humans. While learning to adjust to her new life she’s also making new supernatural friends. She receives a text message from her demon friend, Liesl, that says “help” and she cannot get it off her mind. Amanda tries to find her friend with the help of her other friends, fellow zombie gal Wendy and vampire Gil. This book is not for the squeamish. Happy Hour of the Damned is not a romance and has little to do with that subject. If it wasn’t for the “urban fantasy” on the spine I would think it was romance due to the cover, but it’s not. It has a pinch of an attraction, but nothing that I would call a romance. It’s about sexy narcissistic zombies eating jerks, making drinks, and gore. It has a lot of gore, which is splendid if you enjoy reading that sort of stuff. If you are easily offended, then this book is not for you. Amanda is a snarky, shallow, and vain zombie who eats people and has such a potty mouth and mind that you ask yourself “did she really say or think that?” “Wendy and I have gone through some heated arguments over the past as to which race tastes better. I lean toward the Latino; I am partial to the olive-skinned European men, which by now you are aware. Wendy prefers the fresh snap of an Asian boy. She says they have an almost organic flavor, like most all vegetarians. I think they are a bit bland, but will do in a pinch. The additional appeal is that they are moderately easy to snare; their slight physical nature does make them easier targets.” (p.129) After the initial shock on the tone of this book, Amanda’s voice can get a bit boring. Her snarky attitude becomes a chore, and you can find yourself wanting her to get straight to the point instead of making some pop cultural reference about what’s going on in her crazy world. This is not a light, fluffy, bunny book. It is a black comedy most foul. It reads like a memoir with footnotes. If you don’t like footnotes, then this book is also not for you, because it has plenty and it will annoy you. I had to get use to it, but it was a fun read altogether.

From other reviews I've read, some people either like this book or hate. I liked the premise, the beginning, and the ending, but the middle was a little slow. It's a very quick read so not a huge waste of time if you don't like it. It's a mythical story of a boy trying to fulfill his own personal legend...inspiring and ironic at the same time.
