I read this book because I had heard that Paladin of Souls was excellent, and I wanted to read the first book in the series first. The Curse of Chalion is a long book, but the pacing is good, and the book is interesting from beginning to end. The characters are well-developed. The protagonists are courageous and uncorrupted, in spite of the fatally dangerous and very corrupt world they live in. The book has a single point-of-view character, and follows him on his journey from rescued galley slave to beggar to secretary-tutor to a young princess, and then to... well, I won't spoil it, but it's quite a journey Cazaril is on - one that demands spiritual and physical strength, justified anger, and supernatural protection. The world-building is well done. The world is based on a medieval European model, with war, political complication, powerful and thoroughly despicable villains, gods, and of course, a curse. The religion combines some obvious elements of Christianity (for example, the scourging, the willing sacrifice of one's life for another, the heavenly virgin whose protection is a blue light, the piercing that bleeds water) with elements that are decidedly non-Christian (polytheism, death magic which involves sacrificing small animals, the disconnect between spirit and body). A major theme in the book is the relationship between humans (who must pray and have faith) and gods (in whom magic resides), and the magic in the book is really the magic of miracle. In the end, wrongs are set right, and the book comes to a satisfying conclusion.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the best novel I've ever read. Mark Twain is one of my favorite authors. The last two books I've read from Mark Twain was good. This book was interesting, adventurous, and humorous. I enjoyed everything about this novel by Mark Twain. The story wasn't all futuristic and unrealistic. Me personally can't stand stories that involve the future. I believe stories that involve the future is dull because the author is just predicting how the world can be like. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is about a little boy named Tom Sawyer who gets into a lot of trouble during most of the story. Tom Sawyer getting into trouble most of the time made the story interesting. Half of this story really made me laugh. Every character in this book at least had a humorous scene. The novel was exciting and fun to read. Usually when I read a story. I just read like two chapters and stop reading the book. This story by Mark Twain really caught my attention. Even though this novel was kind of long, it still was worth reading. I enjoyed this story from the beginning to the end. This book could of been no more better. Mark Twain showed everything I was looking for in a story. Mark Twain writting this book made him my favorite author. Mark Twain made it easy to follow the story with his vocabulary. He didn't use big words, which made it a lot more easier to follow the story. I loved this novel by Mark Twain. This is my favorite author and favorite book. This novel been my favorite book since I was 13 years old. Reading this book made me want to read more from Mark Twain. I believe everyone should read this book. This novel is fun and full with excitement.

Aibileen. Minny, and Skeeter are three woman living in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962. Aibileen is a maid who has raised seventeen white children while working for their families. After the death of her own son, she can tell that something inside of her has changed. Minny has a habit of being fired from every job she manages to find. She is determined to keep her latest position, despite the fact that her latest employer seems a little crazy. And Skeeter is a recent college graduate with big dreams of becoming a writer. When she stumbles upon the idea of writing a book about the life of the help, she thinks this may be her big break. I learned about The Help while working at one of my library jobs. Patron after patron would take it out and recommend that I be the next one to read it. With the recent movie out, I decided that it was time I gave it a chance, despite the fact that it's a bit outside of my comfort zone. My first reaction to The Help was one of surprise. After speaking with several people that had read the book, I was under the impression that Skeeter was the main character, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the story was equally split between three protagonists: Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter. Each woman has a complex and distinct personality. Being a young woman in her twenties, I could relate strongest to Skeeter, but I found Aibileen and Minny's stories to be just as engrossing. The plot of The Help is mostly focused around Skeeter's quest to interview black maids for her book. Aibileen and Minny are two of these maids, and end up helping Skeeter find other potential interviewees. The result, as a modern reader living in Maine, is very eye opening. The maids are paid far less than the minimum wage, and are often treated with very little respect. For example, Aibileen is forced to use a dingy bathroom in the garage so she's less likely to spread her “diseases” to her employers. The indication here, that blacks are naturally dirty and must be separated from whites in even their most basic needs, is very disturbing. But of course the relationship between the help and their employers is more complex with that. This is plainly see with Aibileen's job of raising white children. It's impossible for her not to fall in love with her charges, who sometimes even come to see her as their mother. Unfortunately, as they are products of their own environment they eventually grow up and become tainted by prejudice, which spoils the love they share. This is a heartbreaking situation. Although The Help has it's faults (end doesn't seem that realistic), I found The Help to be a very satisfying book, and I enjoyed reading it from start to finish. I'm very glad this was recommended to me.
