This book was full of misinformation. It listed the nightclub Apocalypse Now (which can possibly be the most famous nightclub in all of Vietnam) in Hanoi when it really is in Saigon. I stopped reading it once I saw that because I couldn't believe anything else listed in this guidebook.

A long book, however a good read. From a "feminist" point of view, though most people tend not to remember that the original legends portraying women as either evil or completely stupid (I know when I find out that the man I thought was my husband was really the man who killed my husband under a spell to make him look like my hubby, I always feel much better!) Brings more meat to the old legends without ye olde English, so it's easier to understand for most folks.

I enjoyed this book all the characters are so intertwined into each others lives without knowing it throughout the whole book. Just when you think you know what is going on you really have no idea. The ending left me wanting for more, kind of a what happens now feeling. enjoyed this one!

One thing that I hated most was a stereotype romance with an ordinary-like heroine and a rich hero, with not much of a going on. And this book just bored me from the start. The story was about Ben Walsh, a buff, handsome, tall, dark, rich and successful man who needed a wife in order to save his land from being sold by his grandfather. Hence enter a distant friend of his, Gina the curvaceous latina. They agreed to be married in name only and treated it as a business arrangement. That being said, I could already guess the crisis and the outcome and couldn't care less about the in-between. A total waste of my Kindle's battery.

I had Jesse’s copy from home and he had bought another copy while in Cambridge. We read this together and managed to have several cool conversations both during and after our reading. What to say? Such gorgeous language. I think I’d been intimidated by this book, might have started it years ago and set it down. It was gripping from the first page. Stories within stories; endless twists and turns in the storyline. Noted frequent use of portmanteau words such as: his head backflung; while the slowspitting and squatting men watch her covertly; in a room lighted by a bugswirled kerosence lamp. Interesting use of repetition of specific words; intricate character development. Need to read more Faulkner! Connection of beginning to end. First paragraph: Sitting beside the road, watching the wagon mount the hill toward her, Lena thinks, ‘I have come from Alabama: a fur piece. All the way from Alabama a-walking. A fur piece.’ Thinking although I have not been quite a month on the road I am already in Mississippi, further from home than I have ever been before. I am now further from Doane’s Mill than I have been since I was twelve years old. The ending: “’Saulsbury, Tennessee’ and I looked back and saw her face. And it was like it was already fixed and waiting to be surprised, and that she knew that when the surprise come, she was going to enjoy it. And it did come and it did suit her. Because she said, “’My, my. A body does get around. Here we aint been coming from Alabama but two months, and now it’s already Tennessee.’”

Pinker tackles the technical aspects of mind in the first 4 chapters, then takes a strange turn into philosophy and cultural anthropology for the succeeding 3 chapters. The final chapter, concerning art and other maladaptive pursuits seems to combine the two approaches and creates an interesting summation. My one quibble is that he places a bit too much faith in the ideas of Judith Rich Harris and that he adds smoking to his list of things that fall under the rubric of 'benign masochism'.

I love Shirley Jackson so I really wanted to like this. I didn't. I got bored and annoyed trying to remember who was who (introducing 12 characters in +/- 5 pages is not cool.) As the book wound down, I was more invested but it never got as close as my affections for We have always lived in the Castle.

I read a review (nytimes?) which criticized Dave Eggers' choice to "fictionalize" this account. I felt that his literary style and storytelling devices helped me to connect deeply with the characters and that these connections might have been somewhat stunted if Eggers' approach had been traditionally nonfictional in nature. I enjoyed the pace and the flow of the unfolding of parallel events. I also liked the attempt to make the novel nonpolitical. Everyone suffers and everyone is petty.
