I read an excerpt of this book in the new yorker and fell in love with the story even before the book came out. I told everyone it was fantastic. When it won the Pulitzer, I felt it had been stolen from me... so I still haven't gotten around to reading the entire thing

Brilliant. I bought this book the day after the presidential election in 2004, on Broadway from one of the vendors. I read it that Christmas and adored it. Unfortunately, I left it in my house where it was destroyed thanks to the levees. I need to get a new copy. Cheezy, new age, and totally comforting.

Colin Wilson has written some great books, and he usually has some interesting ideas to bring to the table when writing about esoteric subjects and alternative histories, but this one just feels slapped together. And that's a shame, because I'm fascinated by the possibility that the Neanderthals had an influence on early humans in a way that has had profound consequences for the development of culture, religion, etc. Stan Gooch has written some interesting books on this subject, and though Wison briefly mentions his ideas, he dismisses Gooch's assertion that Homo Sapiens and Neanderthals interbred with one another. Recent studies of the human genome (published after this book was written) seem to indicate that they probably did. In any event, Wilson spends very little time discussing the Neanderthals, and deals with them in a fashion cursory enough to justify calling the book's title misleading. Instead, he inexplicably goes off on a tangent about the Prior of Sion, Jesus and Mary Magdalene's bloodline, and all that jazz, which has very little to do with what the rest of the book is about. All in all, a disappointing showing.

GUESS WHAT??????????? The book is BETTER than the movie! Yes, yes, yes ... as always ... There are some awesome excerpts from this book that can be used for a plethora of reading and/or writing lessons or strategies. It is a great resource for one-liners and quotes to use as quickwrites! :-)

Another excellent Stross riff on the cold war-era and super beings, this one dark and intensely disturbing. To describe too much of the story would be to ruin the experience of having it unfold for you over the brief arc of this novella, but it was like no other science fiction (other than Stross) that I've read, despite some vague reminisences of Robert Charles Wilson's "Protocols of Consumption" and the creepy Twilight Zone feeling I was left with at the end (and it's an awesome ending).

I related to this book and probably still do today. A woman in a patriachal society, strong, intelligent and thwarted by her social position she has to choose between a variety of suitors. Thomas Hardy didn't write stories with happy endings but I always hoped it would be different for Bathsheba.

Ok, I know it's a romance novel and everything, but I would never hear men talking about falling in love and getting married the way that these Chandler brothers do.
