Okay. I REALLY liked this book. So many different layers I didn't bored and the end didn't disappoint. If it weren't so darn big, I would reread to catch somethings I am sure I missed. I like the mythology, ancient god, folktaley stuff and this is full of it.

This was an odd book and yet I kept turning the page trying to find the story's resolution.I enjoyed the read because it had good characters and a strange but intriguing storyline.A young girl Rose discovers that she can identify emotions in food as she eats it...the emotions of the people who have prepared it.Rose's family have dysfunctional elements and her brother seems autistic. It was an interesting book!

This is an amazingly dark and desperate mystery novel. Set in Iceland, in mid late fall, when the days are short and humid and full of desperation. Erlendur ends up investigating the murder of an old, vicious man who might have raped countless of women. This book is about hiding from the past and the consequences of it. It's as good as the best Mankell's novel. I liked it a lot even if I was feeling quite blue when I finished it. It's a total trip into a country we barely know exist and a society that is alien to us and to a point itself. This is not a light mystery novel and it's a fantastic read.

I normally like Harriet Beecher Stowe's style of writing but the other stories I've read were written for fun. She made a comfortable living as a writer of boys adventure novels (under the pen name "Christopher Crowfield") and was a neighbor and mentor of Mark Twain. Uncle Tom's Cabin had a definite political agenda and while it proved to be a significant and influential story (as well as a best seller) it is a flawed story. Harriet Beecher Stowe was inspired to write Uncle Tom's Cabin after one of her servants admitted to being a run away slave. Then later she witnessed a desperate mother cross an icy river to save her son from being sold. These along with her heart felt anti-slavery views compelled her to write a story outlining the evils of slavery. (Harriet Beecher Stowe Center) The book was originally serialized abolitionist newspaper, The National Era. Like Dickens' many serialized novels, the style changes significantly between each chapter. These changes aren't as apparent when the chapters are divided up by days, weeks or months between publication dates but when they sit next to each other in bound form and can be read one after the other the changes can be very jarring and off putting. As Uncle Tom's Cabin is meant to illustrate all the evils of slavery, all the different aspects of society are represented through a large cast of characters. A lot of these characters get in the way of the central characters: Eliza, George, Harry and "Uncle" Tom. Eliza, George and Harry are the examples of the good that can come at the end of slavery and Tom is the martyr to the status quo.

So I picked up this book based on the "hype' I've always heard about Ayn Rand's writing and wanted to see what it was all about. So after just finishing it, I can say the hype is true. I absolutely loved this book...completely broadens your mind! A story well-ahead of its time. It's got everything, philosophy, politics, mystery, action, romance, history etc. The character development is unbelievable! I also loved how the story evolves and you don't know how it will play out...keeps you engaged the entire time while you're reading it. Highly recommend.

I absolutely loved this book for the teens at my library. It has a young adult who has been dropped off on an island of lepers. The heartbreak and courage that she struggles through is amazing all the while getting closer to God is remarkable.

Borrowed from a friend and read on vacation. Compelling after a fashion, though not well-written, I finished it in a matter of hours. Will probably have to read the rest of the series out of pure compulsiveness, but found it to be the literary equivalent of capuccino foam - without the coffee (read: substance) underneath, it is only mildly enjoyable and seems borderline pointless. The only part of it that I found somewhat interesting was Meyer's tweaking of the traditional vampire mythology because I'm sort of a geek about that stuff, mostly from being a fan of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" TV series. Saw the movie "Twilight" and don't get the hype. The soundtrack is good, though.
